When the Smoke Clears by Lynette Eason

Synopsis:~

As a member of the North Cascades Smokejumpers, Alexia Allen always takes care of the equipment that keeps her safe. So when she nearly dies in a fire due to equipment failure, she knows something is up. Ordered to take time off while the investigation continues, Alexia makes a last-minute decision to recuperate at her mother's home and attend her high school reunion. Yet trouble seems to be following her, and within hours of arriving home she's involved with murder, arson--and a handsome detective.

But the conflicts ahead are nothing compared to the ghosts of her past. As she strives to remember and forgive her family history, she must also decide if the secret she's been guarding for the last ten years must finally come to light.

Chock-full of the suspense and romantic tension readers have come to expect from Lynette Eason, When the Smoke Clears is the explosive first book in the Deadly Reunions series.

My take:~

Lynette Eason returns with the first in her Deadly Reunions series, When the Smoke Clears, another romantic suspense that she is well known for.  While I really enjoy Lynette's writing, a couple of things bothered me with this story.  Thanks to the cover art I was anticipating some thrilling scenes about a female smokejumper but these did not eventuate, to my disappointment.  While the back cover copy indicates Alexia is on leave, at some point I imagined we would see Alexia in her element, even more so when learning her back story and what had drawn her to such a risky career in the first place.  The other frustration was the over kill (pun intended!) when it came to the attempts on Alexia's life, that at one point seemed to be occurring every few pages, and kept pulling me from the story.  That said, all is not lost!  Lynette's strong writing is evident on all other aspects of the tale, from the underlying mystery, the attraction between Alexia and Hunter, and good characterisation.  Hunter's brother Chad provides extra conflict and interesting family dynamics and I like that threads of intrigue are not tied up leaving them to flow through the series.  The high expectations I have for Lynette's stories was not quite met with this one, but I would still recommend it and will look forward to the second in the series, When A Heart Stops, releasing this October.

s may not mean leaving home after all?

A Killer Among Us by Lynette Eason

Synopsis:~

Kit Kenyon is a first-rate hostage negotiator. Noah Lambert is a good detective with excellent instincts. The new partners have hardly had time to get used to each other when they are thrown into a grisly murder case. As evidence mounts up and more victims are found, Kit and Noah realize they are on the hunt for a serial killer. The problem is, he's hunting one of them too. With nail-biting suspense, clever plot twists, and a hint of sweet romance, A Killer Among Us is the latest thriller from Lynette Eason. It will keep readers up late as they race to discover the killer--and whether Kit and Noah will live to tell about it.

My take:~

I've enjoyed Lynette Eason's Women of Justice series with her strong female leads, solid suspense and appealing romance. A Killer Among Us ticks all those boxes again as hostage negotiator Kit Kenyon, the adopted sister of Samantha and Jamie from the first two books, teams up with Detective Noah Lambert to hunt down a serial killer. Kit and Noah are great characters who I enjoyed getting to know although I did become distracted by the over abundance of references to their attraction to each other. It was great to see Sam, Connor, Jamie and Dakota return and catch up on their lives and watch Kit learn to be a part of a family she didn't know she had. As with Lynette's previous books, the killer stands out from the beginning but she still provides an entertaining and intriguing tale. I look forward to what Lynette has in store next.

Coming in 2011 from Revell ~ Contemporary

Here's a look at Revell's contemporary novels releasing May ~ June 2011.

Snitch looks fabulous and with an author's dream name, Booker can't go wrong! Lynette is getting better and better so I'm keen to read her latest Women of Justice novel, too, although I'm not a huge fan of the cover!

Are you feeling the book love?!

Snitch by Booker T Mattison

Andre Bolden isn't one to complain. Sure, he split up with his girl Sandra, he doesn't get to see his son Little Dre much, and he's worried about paying child support. Don't Look Back by Lynette Eason

Synopsis:~

Twelve years ago, forensic anthropologist Jamie Cash survived a brutal kidnapping, torture, and rape. After years of therapy, she has made a life for herself--though one that is haunted by memories of her terrifying past. She finally lets herself get close to a man, FBI agent Dakota Richards, when signs start appearing that point to one frightening fact--her attacker is back and ready to finish the job he started all those year ago.

Can she escape his grasp a second time? And will she ever be able to let down her guard enough to find true love?

My take:~

Lynette Eason puts danger and suspense into overdrive in her second Women of Justice novel, Don't Look Back, exceeding my expectations from the solid Too Close to Home. Jamie Cash returns to face her demons in the form of a murderous man intent on destroying the only women who has escaped his disturbed plans. Jamie and Dakota are great characters, both fighting the fear and pain of their past and wondering if a future is possible given the emotional and physical scars they bear. Lynette balances the building of their tentative relationship, the suspense of a killer on the hunt and his unknown identity with a skill that bodes well for her future books and the romantic suspense genre. While my early suspicions of the killer were eventually confirmed, it was by no means a certainty with many twists to the tale along the way. Don't Look Back is an impressive novel and stands alongside the likes of Irene Hannon's In Harm's Way and Robin Carrol's Fear No Evil. I have very high hopes for Lynette's A Killer Among Us, releasing in May, 2011.

Cover changes........

Two of Revell's highly anticipated 2011 novels (certainly from my perspective!) have had a cover change. I have posted the new covers below with links to the previous ones. I'd love your thoughts on which covers you prefer:)

The new cover of Lynette Eas
on's second Women of Justice novel, Don't Look Back, has ditched the guy! I certainly prefer these colours to the original orange.

See previous cover, here.

And with the cover of Mesu Andrew's tale of Job, Love Amid the Ashes, the male has been added! I'm not always a fan of faces on covers but this one appeals to me.

Too Close to Home by Lynette Eason

Synopsis:~

Samantha Cash is the FBI's secret weapon. Her methods are invisible, and she never stops until the case is closed. When missing teens begin turning up dead in a small Southern town, Samantha is assigned to help local chief Connor Wolfe find the killer. And he has two problems with that. There's her faith--in God and herself. And then there's the fact that she looks exactly like his late wife. As they get close to an answer, the case becomes personal. The killer seems to be taking an interest in Connor's 16-year-old daughter, who thinks her dad is getting way too protective. Can't a girl just have some fun?

My take:~

Lynette Eason ramps up the tension with a predator stalking vulnerable teenage girls, a homicide cop trying to balance a demanding career with an equally demanding daughter and a Special Agent with her own reasons for pursuing evil men. Authenticity of characterisation is evident as Connor struggles with being a single father, often failing miserably and as Samantha questions her faith in light of the personal devastation suffered by her sister. While I was disappointed to identify the killer so early in the story, Lynette does not shy away from writing the harsh realities of a murder investigation and the often fatal consequences when a psychotic killer is bent on revenge. The relationships are complex and intriguing and the story is paced well. Lynette ensures readers will seek out the sequel, Don't Look Back, with a disquieting epilogue featuring Samantha's sister, Jamie Cash. Too Close to Home is a solid start to the Women of Justice series.

Available April 2010 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

With thanks to Revell for my review copy

On a sad side note, the day I finished this book it hit my local news that a man had been arrested in the very circumstances of Lynette's plot. The reality of fiction can sometimes be hard to swallow.
