Character Spotlight ~ Julie Carobini's Suz Mitchell & Seth Russo

Suz & Seth

Julie Carobini returns readers to Otter Bay with her latest story, Fade to Blue, and gives them a sneak peek into Hearst Castle.

Enjoy meeting her new characters:~

Brief physical description

Suz: Brown eyes and a face framed by chestnut-colored, shoulder-length hair. Lithe in stature.

Seth: Diamond-shaped face with a dimple at the southernmost point, penetrating gray-green eyes, and high cheekbones.

Actor/famous person

Photos of models attached!

Strengths and weaknesses:

Suz is a dreamer, a trait that helps her overcome terrible sadness. Her main weakness, however, is perfectionism … she needs to know when to let go.

Seth is adventurous and skilful. His main weakness is the bitterness he carries from more than one past heartache.

Quirk (if any)

Suz ~ Drinks chai tea…a lot!

Seth ~ Thinks long and hard before speaking. Not quick to share his feelings. (Drives a certain old flame crazy.)

Your inspiration for the character

Suz appeared in my previous novel, A Shore Thing. By the end of that story, even I wanted to know what happened next for the big-hearted, single mom from that book. Fade to Blue satisfies that curiosity …

Background to the story

Suz Mitchell is a determined dreamer and won't allow her ex-husband Len's jail sentence to ruin their young son Jeremiah's life. An accomplished artist, she moves with her child across the country to California's central coast and lands a job restoring priceless art for the historic Hearst Castle overlooking the ocean.

To her utter surprise, a serious old flame, Seth, is also now working at Hearst and jumbles the dreams inside Suz's heart. While sorting out the awkwardness of their past split and current spiritual differences, a repentant Len shows up eager to restore his family.

When confronted with her most painful, past decisions, will Suz second guess herself? Or will she learn to let God restore all that once seemed lost?

Thanks for dropping by, Julie :)

Julie Carobini ~ FamilyFiction Plus

I had the pleasure of interviewing Julie Carobini for the M
ay issue of FamilyFiction's digital magazine and can now share the full interview with you.

Enjoy!

What makes your character, Suz Mitchell unique?

Suz is an artist with a big heart. She’s so focused on her goal of keeping her son’s life normal and safe that she puts aside her own needs. She truly faces difficulties with tenacity and faith. Love that!

Share a little about Otter Bay and its inhabitants

Otter Bay is a fictional town along California’s magnificent central coast based upon the combo of “real” side-by-side areas: Cambria and San Simeon. (San Simeon is the home of the famed Hearst Castle.) Otter Bay’s inhabitants love the sea and spend oodles of time outdoors with family, friends, and quirky neighbours.

What inspired you to write Fade to Blue?

Since the inception of the Otter Bay series with Sweet Waters, I’ve wanted to set a book with the famed Hearst Castle as its backdrop. So much intrigue and mystery about the real castle on the hill! Of course, novels are more than their location. So after writing the 2nd book in the series, A Shore Thing, I longed to know what happens next for big-hearted, single mom, Suz, from that story. Fade to Blue satisfies that curiosity.

How challenging is it to incorporate your faith into your stories?

The last thing I want to do as a Christian who writes is to steer someone wrong. My characters are flawed human beings who need the truth. But so am I. See the challenge? If I’m going to add a faith thread into my books then I must be in prayer. I must also seek wise counsel (Prov. 1:5). There’s a note in the acknowledgments for Fade to Blue thanking my pastor. One Sunday morning as I wrestled with the right, godly answer to the heroine’s situation, my pastor “happened” to preach on the very topic. Yay, God!

What is next in your writing schedule?

I’m working on two more seaside stories, one set in southern California and the other far to the north. I’ve also just re-released my first novel, Chocolate Beach, on Kindle & Nook—with recipes and other bonus content! I keep my website updated, so please stop by periodically for news and events: www.juliecarobini.com

Over the Edge by Brandilyn Collins

Torn from the front lines of medical debate and the author’s own experiences with Lyme disease, Over the Edge is riveting fiction, full of twists and turns-and powerful truths about today’s medical field.

Janessa McNeil knew the Lyme War was real. After all, her husband, Dr. Brock McNeil, a researcher and professor at Stanford University’s Department of Medicine, specializes in tick-borne diseases-especially Lyme. He concludes that Chronic Lyme disease doesn’t exist. Even as patients across the country are getting sicker, Brock’s committee is about to announce its latest findings—which will further seal the door shut for Lyme treatment. Yes, Janessa knew about the Lyme War. She just never expected to be part of it. But one embittered man is out to prove the expert wrong by infecting Jannie with Lyme disease. When she falls ill, he states his demands: convince her husband to publicly reverse his stand on Lyme, or the next one to fall ill will be their daughter. But Jannie’s marriage is already rocky, and she’s so sick she can hardly move or think.

As her husband and his colleagues deny she has Lyme at all, will this pervasive disease—and the bitter battle surrounding it—cost her everything?

Pompeii by T LHigley

Pompeii, a city that’s many things to many people. For Cato, it’s the perfect escape from a failed political career in Rome. A place to start again, become a winemaker. But when a corrupt politician wrongfully jails Cato’s sister, he must oust the man from power to save her.

For Ariella, Pompeii is a means to an end. As a young Jew, she escaped the fall of Jerusalem only to endure slavery to a cruel Roman general. She ends up in Pompeii, disguised as a young man and sold into a gladiator troupe. Her anger fuels her to fight well, hoping to win the arena crowds and reveal her gender at the perfect time. Perhaps then she will win true freedom. But evil creeps through the streets of Pompeii. Political corruption, religious persecution, and family peril threaten to destroy Ariella and Cato, who are thrown together in the battle to survive.

As Vesuvius churns with deadly intent, the two must bridge their differences to save the lives of those they love, before the fiery ash buries Pompeii, leaving the city lost to the world.

Fallen Angel by Maj. Jeff Struecker & Alton Gansky

Major Jeff Struecker (a real life Black Hawk Down veteran) and his award-winning coauthor tell a space-based intelligence story of intense extremes in their new novel, Fallen Angel, named for the “Angel-12” American satellite that is ambushed by China and falls 22,000 miles to land in remote Siberia.

U.S. Sgt. Major Eric Moyer and his Special Ops unit are deployed to find Angel-12 and keep its advanced nuclear fuel from enemy hands-and there are many. A Russian shadow government bent on restoring the former USSR pursues the satellite as does the Chinese special forces group that knocked it from the sky. A rash of military and domestic hostage concerns ensues as the stark truth looms: three nations are racing to the satellite, but only one will get there first.

Dancing on Shattered Glass by Pamela Binnings Ewen

In the steamy city of New Orleans in 1974, Amalise Catoir sees Phillip Sharp as a charming, magnetic artist, unlike any man she has known. Ama’s rash decision to marry Phillip proves to be a mistake as he becomes overly possessive, drawing his wife away from family, friends, and her faith. His insidious, dangerous behavior becomes her dark, inescapable secret.

In this lawyer’s unraveling world, can grace survive Ama’s fatal choice? What would you do when prayers seem to go unanswered, faith has slipped away, evil stalks, and you feel yourself forever dancing on shattered glass?

A Shore Thing by Julie Carobini with giveaways

Synopsis:~

Callie Duflay just isn’t like the rest of her family. While they’ve built white collar lives, she prefers getting her hands dirty by working with children and local California causes. When Callie learns that a beloved piece of untouched property in her town of Otter Bay may soon be developed, she confronts the architect assigned to the project. Gage Mitchell may be an easygoing, eco-friendly professional, but he’s not about to back off this job no matter how cute Callie or her pet pooch, Moondoggy, may be. His reasons and hers are noble—both have a heart for protecting God’s creation, and the truth is these two would be perfect for each other outside of this face-off. But will they ever figure that out?

My take:~

Julie Carobini's books always make my must read list for their tender romance, gentle humour and spiritual message. A Shore Thing combines these ingredients, adds in a lovable dog, an environmental dilemma and two people determined to stand up for what they believe in. That being said, I didn't feel as connected with this story as I have with her previous novels but can't quite put my finger on exactly why. I did wish for more interaction between Gage and Callie as I enjoyed them both as characters, for their integrity and enthusiasm and the sparks that flew between them. A Shore Thing is a good read and one I still recommend. I will certainly be on the lookout for Julie's next novel.

With thanks to B&H for my review ARC copy

Character Spotlight ~ Julie Carobini's Gage Mitchell & Callie Dufflay from A Shore Thing

Gage & Callie

Julie always delights with her beach loving novels! Full of fun and romance you can be assured of a perfect beachside escape. Once you get to know Gage and Callie, you'll be even more keen to get your hands on a copy of A Shore Thing.

Over to you, Julie:~

Brief physical description

Gage:

Chestnut, wavy locks, tan skin, eyes the color of seagrass in the spring. Toned from running, but not overly muscular, height about 5'10”.
Callie:

Blonde-ish hair with a loose spiral to it. Light skin tone, brown eyes, athletic build. Personality tends toward fiery.

Moondoggy:

Based on my dog, Charlie. I've attached a photo.
Rel: He's almost as cute as Gage - LOL!

Actor/famous person

Gage: Similar to Simon Baker :) Rel: It's that Aussie charm!

Callie: Similar to the way Carrie Underwood once looked.

Strengths and weaknesses

Gage

Streng
ths: Easy going temperament--usually. Protective of jilted sister and her young son.

Weaknesses: At times cynical, and can be slow to act on a hunch.

Callie

Strengths: Driven, protective, charitable.

Weakness: Acts first, thinks later.

Quirk (if any):

Gage:

Loves to eat turkey burgers, slathered in mustard, with a roasted green chile
on top.

Callie:

Tacks inspirational sayings & Scripture all over the walls of her cottage; walks everywhere possible.

Your inspiration for the character

I'm fascinated by my brother, Dan's (Navarro) career as a certified green architect, and I started to think about how his work honors God. I became equally fascinated thinking about how a person in his position could be in direct conflict with someone of the same mind, but who approaches their beliefs in a different way. Enter Callie, an eco-conscious gal who loves God, children, and the open land of Otter Bay. I kept wondering h
ow these two could find 'common ground' and that was the seed for the characters and this story.

Background to the story

In A Shore Thing, Callie Duflay is always involved in a cause…whether it's working with children at a local summer camp, or protecting the environment, or adopting a stray dog she names Moondoggy. But when she learns a developer wants to destroy the last piece of untouched property in her small town of Otter Bay, Callie leads the charge to stop the progress--progress some in her family and community want to see happen.

When she confronts the architect of the plan, Gage Mitchell, about the property, sparks fly and feelings develop between them. Can these two ever set aside their differences and somehow find common ground?

Thanks Julie for sharing ~ I've been waiting for such a long time for someone to pick Simon Baker - appreciate it ;-)

Getting to know Julie Carobini

Julie Carobini has been a favourite author of mine since reading her debut novel, Chocolate Beach. Julie imbues each of her stories with humour, grace and the sights and smells of the ocean! Be sure to check out her latest novel, Sweet Waters and the 2010 sequel, A Shore Thing, released by B&H Fiction.

Over to you, Julie:~

If you could have chosen your own name, what would it be?

Julie Marie (
the name my parents gave me :)

Your first pet’s name?

Swissy (the cat)

Your best
friend’s name in primary (elementary) school?

Stephanie

Did you
have a special toy that went everywhere with you when you were young? Please describe.

Haha...hm. Probably my Donny Osmond doll.

If you could meet a famous person, who would it be and why?

I'd want to meet Billy Graham and ask him dozens of questions about theology, politics and his family. His efforts for Christ have had such far reaching effects that I think I'd just like to hear him in his own voice talking about his life.

If you were
stranded on a desert island what one object would you want with you? (Besides your Bible of course)

A pen. I could always write my next novel on my hands and arms.

What's your favourite ice cream flavour?

Jamoca Almond Fudge from Baskin Robbins

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I grew up in LA and wanted to be an actress (pretty much the dream of every other little girl in LA.) I took acting lessons and became part of the Burbank Little Theater for a while, but then realized I didn't really like being on stage all that much :)

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I'd like to go to Northern Italy where my husband's family is from, then fly down to Sicilia to visit my sister in law's relatives.

Besides God, who has influenced you the most?

My mother. She's sweet and tough. Love her.

What's your favourite book?

Tough question because I read all kinds of things, but Jan Karon's At Mitford series sticks out in my mind. I loved almost all of them and can pick one up randomly and be instantly transported to that little town of Mitford...

What part of your daily routine do you enjoy most?

My morning latte, especially when my husband Dan makes it for me
:)

What's your favourite movie?

Sleepless in Seattle ~ such a sucker for romance. Wish they would've made a sequel, though.

What will we find you in the most – designer dress & heels, Tank top and boardies, jeans and a t-shirt?

Jeans, soft cotton blouse, flip flops--even in winter.

Where's the most interesting place you have been?

Bath, England (Jane Austen once lived there!)

What's your most fervent prayer?

For my children. Always for them.

What's the bravest thing you've ever done?

Admitted sin to someone else.

What gift have you received that you will always treasure?

My marriage to Dan (ripply sigh here)

What is your favourite Bible verse (or "one" of your favourites) and what does it mean to you?

Col. 3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not men..."

What was your most embarrassing moment in High School?

Not making the Drill Team. Tha
nks for causing me to relive that.

You’re visiting Australia (I can always hope!), where do you go first ~ Sydney Harbour, Great Barrier Reef or Uluru (Ayers Rock)?

Great Barrier Reef!

Favourite beach activity?

Watching my youngest daughter run amok with Charlie the Dog

How did your husband propose?

Showed up at my apartment one night after work with a bouquet of roses and a shy smile on his face. He asked me to marry him ~ then called my parents even though I was already a grown woman living on my own. Super sweet.

Please ask each of your children to describe you with one word and share!

Oh, boy. Okay, here goes:

18 year old son: Booyah! (Honestly, that's what he said.)

15 year old daughter: Animated (Her 2nd choice after I told her that 'psychotic' was unacceptable.)

11 year old daughter: Entertaining (The only one who didn't take longer than
5 minutes to come up with something, Lol)

Sweet Waters

What or whom inspired your characters?

I read the verse “Hear the word of the LORD, O nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands…” (Jer. 31:10) and thought, “Hm, what if a person had to be physically moved from one
place to another in order for God to get her attention? From there, I played the ‘what-if’ game. While this story is fiction, I realized that God had done a similar thing in my own life, and that once removed from the things that kept me from him, I finally heard him clearly.

Are you most like Tara, Mel or Camille?

I can relate best to Tara because I too am the oldest child and with that spot in the birth order comes lots o
f responsibility (or at least the perception of often overwhelming responsibility ;)

You write fun stories with a serious side – how do you find the balance?

I've lived through tough times involving major illness, a broken heart and financial woes. In spite of all the yuck, God has given me the ability and desire to laug
h and I so love him for that! I think this is why I try to convey seemingly contradictory emotions onto the page. The trick, I believe, is not to downplay the serious stuff, but also to acknowledge the hope that we can find through faith in God. I think of my beachy novels as stories offering "Waves of Grace."

Please describe each of your main characters from Sweet Waters with one word

Tara: Sensible

Mel: Sarcastic
Camille: Flighty

What was your favourite scene to write?

I find birth order and sibling rivalry fascinating, so I'd have to say that my favorite scenes to write were those where the sisters 'sparred' in some way.

What do you hope readers take away from this story?

I hope Sweet Waters demonstrates that sometimes when we get what we wish for, it isn’t ‘all that’? And yet if we surrender it all to God, his plans for us are better than we could have concocted for ourselves.

A Shore Thing releases in July, 2010 ~ care to share?

The second of the Otter Bay Novels, A Shore Thing will be released in July 2010. New characters ~ same gorgeous setting. This story centers around Callie Duflay and her fight to keep a huge development from destroying the central coast—while also protecting her heart from the charming architect on the proposed project.

What is in your writing pipeline now? A sneak peek, please?

I'm having a ball writing the as-yet untitled 3rd Otter Bay Novel! It involves the famed Hearst Castle and heartbreak and restoration...can't wait for you to read it :)

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Julie ~ it's been a delight getting to know you better!

Character Spotlight ~ Julie Carobini's Tara Sweet & Josh Adams

Today the spotlight shines on.....Tara Sweet & Josh Adams

I love Julie Carobini's books and Sweet Waters is no exception! Julie manages to fill her stories with humour and fun as well as tackling heartfelt pain with grace and tenderness. Don't miss out on the first book in her Otter Bay novels ~ I can't wait for the second book but alas, June, 2010 seems a long time away ;-)

Over to you, Julie:~

Brief physical description

In a departure from my previous heroines, Tara is a "summer", ie., fair, rosy pink skin tones. Her hair is light. Her build is, hm, not 'average' but let's just say 'normal'. :)

Josh is tall and broad shouldered--he's a firefigher after all, LOL--with golden highlights in his hair.

Actor/famous person

Well, picture younger versions of Gwyneth Paltrow (although not as slender) and Matthew McConaghey.

Strengths and weaknesses

Tara can be described in one word: sensible. As the first born of the girls, Tara has always been a responsible leader of the family, but sometimes she can be unyielding--or at least
perceived that way.

When it comes to firefighting, Josh's strength is in his fearless
ness. Just might be a weakness of his too...

Quirk (if any)

We all put our trust in something. In Tara's case, she is addicted to the life of a soap opera character, so much so that she reads the daily digest and when in a pickle herself, often wonders what "Eliza", the character, would do.

Your inspiration for the character

A verse in Scripture caught my attention one day, "Hear the word of the LORD, O nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands..." (Jer. 31:10) and I thought, "Hm, what if a person had to be physically moved in order for God to get her attention?' While this story is fiction, I realized that God had done a similar thing in my own life, and that once removed from the things that kept me from him, I final
ly heard him clearly.

Background to the story

What happens when the fairytale turns out to be a soap opera?

Tara Sweet is nothing if not sensible. Usually. But her engagement is off, and her mother—yes, mother—is newly married and gallivanting around Europe.
It’s time for a change. So she convinces her sisters to honor their father’s final wish an
d rediscover the fairy-tale life they knew in Otter Bay, California. But Tara discovers fairy tales are fragile—and truth is often one ugly layer after another of secrets, accusation, rumor, and a past an entire church wants to forget.

Firefighter Josh Adams knows all about battling personal demons. He’s been doing so ever since a woman nearly died in his arms. Actually, long before . . .
As the turbulence in their lives grows, Tara and Josh find themselves at odds with their families, their faith, the townspeople of Otter Bay—and each other.

Only in facing the lies from the past can they find the truth.

Just fabulous, Julie ~ many thanks for stopping by. Looking forward to "meeting" Gage next year - LOL!!

On Thursday, I will be spotlighting Kaye Dacus' Meredith Guidry & Major O'Hara from Menu for Romance ~ more fun!
