Coming in September/October from Tyndale House

It's been a bit quiet around here as I have been away for a week enjoying a lovely holiday break with my sister and her family but I'm back with a terrific post of upcoming books from Tyndale House.

I admit I'm thrilled with the cover art and am keen to read them all, especially Randy, Chris and Mel's books :)  Mind you Mel is going to have to work hard to be up to the standard of my favourite military fiction author, Ronie Kendig :)

Love to hear your thoughts on these offerings!

When Marshall Becker arrives in Lamorlaye, France, to begin the massive renovation of a Renaissance-era castle, he unearths a dark World War II history few in the village remember. The project that was meant to provide an escape for Becker instead becomes a gripping glimpse into the human drama that unfolded during the Nazi occupation and seems to live on in midnight disturbances and bizarre acts of violence.

Populated with a cast of complex characters, “Tangled Ashes” follows Becker’s exploration of the castle’s shadowy past as he seeks to cope with an unbearable present.  From the virtually mute recluse who lives in the gatehouse to the feisty and enigmatic nanny of the owner’s children, every one of the château’s inhabitants seems to have something to hide and something to survive—but none more so than Becker himself.

Character Spotlight ~ Susan May Warren's Lilly

Susan May Warren has just released her second Daughters of Fortune novel, Baroness, available now from Summerside Press.

Synopsis

Lilly and Rosie, daughters of an empire coming of age in the roaring twenties, can have anything they want except freedom. Expected to marry well and to take the reins of the empire, they have their lives planned out for them. But Lilly, Esme's daughter longs to return home to Montana, to adventure outside the confines of New York City. And Jinx's daughter Rosie dreams of the bright lights of the newly emerging silver screen. But following their dreams - from avant garde France, to Broadway, to the skies in the world of barnstormers and wing-walkers will take all their courage. And if they find love, will they choose freedom or happily ever after?

Enjoy meeting Lilly!

Brief physical description

Petite, brown hair, a hint of trouble in her brown eyes. Lilly grew up out west and is more cowgirl than society girl. She is down to earth, strong, brave and more than her physical appearance suggests.

Actor/famous person

British actress Carey Mulligan

Strengths and weaknesses

In Lily’s own words:

“I’m 20 years old, former cowgirl who is now trapped in the big city. When my mother said we should go and visit my grandparents in NYC, I never guessed that we’d end up living here. I have tried to fit in – letting my mother, my aunt Jinx and my cousin Rosie dress me and introduce me to society life, but mostly I just feel out of place. My favorite place is Central Park, but not long ago, I was riding Charity, my horse through the park and met a number of Rosie’s friends who made fun of me - riding two legs over the horse like I was. I just don’t fit in. And I don’t want to – I am not made for New York, and I don’t like it. I especially don’t like my mother’s new husband, Oliver. He’s a little bossy and is always hovering – as if I might break or run away. Mother’s been awfully ill these past few months – we’re going to Paris for a vacation now that she is better. I hate Paris even more. I just want to fit in, and I’ll do anything to get back to where I’m from. Even if it means I’m a little impetuous.”

Quirk (if any)

I jump too quickly into adventure and...trouble. But I’m brave and willing to hold onto my dreams even if I might get hurt.

Your inspiration for the character

Amelia Earhart, and all the young barnstormers of the 1920s.

Background to the story

I wanted to write a story about two women, Lilly and Rosie, daughters of wealthy families who were coming of age in the roaring twenties. These ladies could have anything they want…except freedom. Expected to marry well and to take the reins of the empire, they have their lives planned out for them. But, Lilly, Esme’s daughter longs to return home to Montana, to adventure outside the confines of New York City. And Jinx’s daughter Rosie dreams of the bright lights of the newly emerging silver screen. I wanted to build characters representative of the times – both the flappers, but also the adventurers of the era, like Amelia Earhart, and other flyers. So, while Rosie embodies the showgirl, early Hollywood starlet, Lilly embodies the adventure driven pilots and wing walkers. They both follow their dreams – from avant garde France, to Broadway, to the skies in the world of barnstormers and wing-walkers. And if when they find love, they have to choose freedom or happily ever after. Throughout the book I ask the question – what does it really mean to be free?

The Shadow of Your Smile by Susan May Warren

Tragedy and despair has driven them apart ~ another heartbreak may shatter their marriage completely.

Eli and Noelle Hueston's marriage is on the brink of divorce when an accident results in significant memory loss for Noelle, hurtling her back to college life without any recollection of her husband, marriage or children.  Fearful of the imposing man calling himself her husband, Noelle is shocked at how her life has turned out and searches for answers about the loss of her youthful dreams and desires.

Eli Hueston is surprised by the woman who emerges from unconsciousness, so different to the withdrawn and aloof Noelle he has been avoiding by seeking alone time fishing at his ice house and helping our the widow of his best friend.

In high school, Emma Nelson was a little bit in love with her best friend's brother but Kyle Hueston never gave her the time of day.  An unexpected meeting proves nothing has changed when Kyle doesn't even recognise her.  Trying to chase someone else's dream has left Emma weary and homesick but nothing will ever make her return to the town of Deep Haven.

The Shadow of Your Smile, a beautiful story of loss, love and discovery, is refreshingly honest with both funny and poignant moments scattered throughout, and is Susan May Warren as her best.  Written with heartfelt emotion and deeply layered characters, Noelle and Eli's journey is captivating, both in its tender moments and the occasions when you want to stop a them from making an inevitably  foolish decision.  Eli and Noelle are intriguing and authentic characters, trying to make the best of a difficult and awkward time as they negotiate their future based on a past only one of them knows.  Emma and Kyle's tentative relationship is equally enthralling as they negotiate the impact of attraction on their divergent future plans and commitments. Susan explores serious themes that impact marriages and relationships with authenticity and honesty, while maintaining the charm and whimsy of that have marked her Deep Haven stories.  If you haven't read any of Susan's books, The Shadow of Your Smile is a great place to start and will undoubtedly garner her readers for life.

Baby, It's Cold Outside by Susan May Warren

"More than any other holiday, Christmas had the power to rip her asunder."

In 1949, Dottie Morgan was done with Christmas - too many painful memories and no one to share them with.  Once the doyen of Frost, Minnesota's Christmas spirit, Dottie just prays the season will be over quickly and quietly.

""Sweetheart, no man is going to marry a gal who can change her own tires.  Men need to feel needed.""

Even Violet Hart's mother devalues her sacrifice and hard work during World War II as a member of the WAACs.  While the citizens of Frost find Violet's abilities unworthy of a young woman, Violet is hoping the man she has been corresponding with cares for more than impractical feminine accomplishments.

"He might be a farmer, but he had years of practice reading the nonverbal communication of a wounded woman."

Gordon Lindholm has watched over his neighbour for more than two decades.  Silently, and without thanks, made sure milk was delivered and wood chopped, but those things didn't erase the pain of grief, anger and loss or the accusation in her eyes.

"The truth will set you free.  The words thrummed in his head. Yes. If only he believed them."

Jake Ramsey turns up in Frost on a mission.  To speak the truth to the woman he has grown to love, yet never met and to face the consequences of choices he has come to regret.

Susan May Warren's Baby, It's Cold Outside is a beautiful Christmas story that will touch your heart and reignite your love for Christmas traditions and the importance of sharing the spirit of Christmas with others.  Emotive and engaging, each character is replete with personality, foibles and strength, as they grapple with past heartache and for some, the anticipation hope brings.  The town of Frost and the post war era come alive under Susan's deft hand, and the relationships, both old and new, are replete with poignancy and tenderness.  Dottie, Violet, Gordon and Jake will capture your imagination as they seek to come to terms with their lives.  The magic that is Christmas, with its message of hope and second chances, glows in this story and will evoke tears of sadness and joy.  Baby, It's Cold Outside is a must read for anyone who adores Christmas novels and even for those, like me, who don't!  The perfect read to curl up with as the birth of Jesus approaches.

Heiress by Susan May Warren

In her Gilded Age retelling of the Biblical story of Jacob and Esau, Susan May Warren reminds readers of the sordid nature of greed, infidelity and betrayal in a time where opulence, entitlement and social standing were life itself.

Esme Price has been groomed to take her place in society and her parents intend to engineer her marriage to benefit their pocketbooks rather than Esme's heart.  When her heart is shattered by tragedy and then sisterly betrayal, Esme flees New York to seek a life of independence on the Montana frontier and experiences a life she couldn't have imagined.

Jinx's deception and betrayal of her sister garner her the man and lifestyle she thought she wanted but too soon she discovers that behind her husband's smooth facade lies a heart overflowing with anger and vicious intent.  A fateful encounter changes her life of privilege to an internal battle of heartache and devastating secrets.

Susan May Warren has penned a compelling tale of the changing fortunes of two sisters in Heiress.  In depth characterisation and fascinating historical detail mark this story from beginning to end.  Esme's journey from privileged society girl to an independent woman determined to carve out a career, despite opposition, is intriguing and moving.  As Jinx becomes trapped in an imaginable world of heartache through her own poor choices, Susan shines a light on the consequences of avarice, self indulgence and bitter desire.  Realistic and genuine, conservative readers may find the storyline confronting but those who seek an honest reflection of sin and the need for God's redemption will find Heiress enthralling.  The parallels with Jacob and Esau are intriguing and well thought out and reflect the same ugliness of the brothers' bitter dispute as a retelling should.  A number of editorial errors were surprising in this otherwise excellent novel.  Both the burgeoning newspaper and dangerous mining industries are explored, and the detail makes very interesting reading.  This first novel  in the Daughters of Fortune series will have readers highly anticipating more quality historical writing from such a versatile author.

Hook, Line & Sinker by Susan May Warren

Synopsis:~

The annual Deep Haven fishing contest draws professional and amateur anglers from across the country, but this year, Ross Springer is determined to win the top cash prize. In fact, he has no choice. It’s his last chance to leave a lasting legacy at Bethel College. He just never imagined his fundraising scheme would hook Abigail Cushman, the grad student who reminds him of all they’d had—and lost—every time she glances his way.

Abigail Cushman may not know the difference between a bass and a trout, but how hard can it be to catch a fish? She’s a quick learner, and she’s certain her smarts can net her a win over Ross Springer, the handsome charmer she’s tried to forget since grief tore them apart.

In the ultimate showdown between brains and heart, will Ross and Abby reel in more than they bargained for?

My take:~

I'm delighted to say I thoroughly enjoyed the second of Susan May Warren's e-book prequels, Hook, Line & Sinker!  Returning readers to her beloved Deep Haven, Susie tells a heart warming story of misconceptions, guilt and hidden love as estranged childhood friends, Abigail and Ross, oppose each other in a fishing contest.  Fun and sweet, the story took me back to my own University days when I was involved with a campus Christian group and met my future husband!  If you haven't read Susie's Deep Haven novels, this novella will certainly entice you to dive in and if you have, you just may be dusting them off your shelves for a reread.

Waiting for Dawn by Susan May Warren

Synopsis:~

In this prequel to Flee the Night—the first book in Susan May Warren’s critically acclaimed Team Hope series—Lacey Galloway leads a rather predictable life as a contractor for the Department of Defense. But news that Sergeant First Class Jim Micah is missing in action leads her on a dangerous trek overseas to rescue the man who secretly captured her heart.

Although her DOD connections quickly cut through the red tape, she also enlists the help of her ex-boyfriend and Micah’s best friend, Lieutenant John Montgomery. As they hatch a covert plan to find and rescue Micah, Lacey’s feelings are once again torn between the two men.

My take:~

Having had the pleasure of reading Susan May Warren's Team Hope series more than once, I was excited to hear about her e-book only prequel, Waiting for Dawn.  I adore Susie's writing but this one wasn't one of my favourites, I'm afraid.   Micah constantly dwells on his feelings for Lacey while on mission and John Montgomery ignores military protocol without a second thought.  I found the emphasis on both of these responses distracting and a little inauthentic for career military men.  Also, the ease with which Lacey enters Iraq and a war zone to rescue Micah raised my eyebrows more than once!  Discovering more about Micah, Lacey and John was intriguing and filled out more of their back story which I enjoyed.  Regardless of my thoughts on this novella, it has made me want to dive back into the series and read them with new eyes.  I love the idea of the prequel, especially for much loved books, so I will shortly be reading Hook, Line & Sinker, another e-book novella which Susan has written for her Deep Haven series, and I hope it grabs me more than this one.

Character Spotlight ~ Susan May Warren's Jinx Worth

Character Spotlight

 Jinx Worth

Susan May Warren pens the first in her Daughters of Fortune historical series with Heiress.  Enjoy meeting Jinx!

Over to you, Susan:~

Brief physical description

Jinx is curvy and shorter, with long black hair, a smug smile and someone who thinks she just might know everything. She wants to be at the top of the social class of NYC at the turn of the century, and she’ll do anything to make that happen. However, the cost may be more than she can bear.

Actor/famous person

Meet Jinx: Lea Michele

Strengths and weaknesses

Jinx knows what she wants and how to get it. She belongs to the social elite, knows how to plan parties, run a household and advance her husband’s career. What she doesn’t expect is her heart falling for another man. Her strength is her determination and drive, her weakness is her desire to be loved.

Quirk (if any)

Jinx is fiercely independent during a time when women were fixtures in the household. She learns to drive a car early on, and even teaches her husband’s brother how to drive. She also joins the suffragettes and marches on Washington.

Your inspiration for the character

I wanted a character that could resemble Jacob, of the biblical Jacob and Esau story (someone who could compliment her older sister, Esme). Jinx is headstrong, a little diabolical, but also broken by her choices and decisions, afraid to face God and her sister with her sins.

Background to the story

I love history, and especially the turbulent times of the early 20th century – the gilded age, the roaring twenties, the depression era thirties and World War two. This is the first book in the Daughters of Fortune series about a family and their generations through this turbulent time. Heiress asks the question: If you could buy anything, would you sacrifice it all for love?

Thanks for sharing, Susie :)  Always lovely to have you visit!

Coming in 2012 from Tyndale House

Here's a sneak peek at some of Tyndale's early 2012 releases and I love you to join in the conversation!

Cover wise, I can't go past The Search Committee!  I love the sheep and their symbolism ~ it is quirky and different.  Chris Fabry's, too, given it is a male dominated cover.  Not sure when I last saw that on a CF cover ;-)  Susie's cover looks awfully similar to another book...can you guess?

Love Susie and Chris' books so really looking forward to them and keen to see what former police officer, Janice Cantore has to offer given her experience on the force.  Cathy Gohlke's is one of a handful of books you will see in 2012 surrounding the Titanic.

Don't be shy ~ what do you think?

As she tries to regain her memory and slowly steps into her role as a wife and mother, Eli helps her readjust to daily life with sometimes-hilarious, sometimes-heartwarming results. But can she fall in love again with a man she can’t remember? Will their secrets destroy them . . . or has erasing the past given them a chance for a future?

Millions tune in to hear her advice on dating and falling in love, unaware that she’s never really done either. Issy’s ratings soar when it seems she’s falling in love on-air with a caller. A caller she doesn’t realize lives right next door.

Caleb Knight served a tour of duty in Iraq and paid a steep price. The last thing he wants is pity, so he hides his disability and moves to Deep Haven to land his dream job as the high school football coach. When his beautiful neighbor catches his eye, in a moment of desperation he seeks advice from My Foolish Heart, the show that airs before his favorite sports broadcast.

Before he knows it, Caleb finds himself drawn to the host—and more confused than ever. Is his perfect love the woman on the radio . . . or the one next door?

My take:~

Susan May Warren always produces the goods and while I don't think My Foolish Heart is the best book she has ever written, it provides all the great things her stories entail ~ engaging characters, an adorable town, conflict, attraction and overcoming the odds. Caleb's struggle with his disability and Issy's PTSD enables Susan to delve into the heartache that comes from physical and mental trauma and the hard road towards wholeness from a spiritual and emotional perspective. My Foolish Heart combines tender romance with deep human struggles and is a delightful read. I hope Susan returns to Deep Haven again!

Missions of Mercy Blog Tour

Point of No Return

An American boy and a warlord's engaged daughter have disappeared-together-in an Eastern European border country. Only one man can find them in time to prevent an international meltdown-Chet Stryker. But Chet is taken aback when he realizes the boy is the nephew of Mae Lund, Chet's former flame. When Mae
insists on rescuing her relative herself, Chet knows he has to protect her from the enemy on their trail.

Yet can he protect himself from falling for Mae again?

My take:~

I loved Susan May Warren's Mission: Russia series so it was great to see the conclusion to Mae's story, whom we first meet in that original series. Susan creates good dialogue between Chet and Mae as the tension between them escalates. There is plenty of action and I enjoyed the back story, especially Chet's. That said, the minimal word count of the Love Inspired format makes everything feel a bit rushed, even with an author of Susan's calibre. Point of No Return is still a solid, entertaining read.

Mission: Out of Control

Brody "Wick" Wickham is a former Green Beret turned security agent-with a 100 percent mission success rate. No way is his new assignment changing that. Even if it's protecting a diva American rock star while she's on tour in Europe. Except Veronica "Vonya" Wagner isn't just a beautiful celebrity used to having her way-she's the daughter of a U.S. Senator. And she's hiding a dangerous secret.

When Wick discovers what's at stake, how far over the line will he go to keep them both alive?

My take:~

Mission: Out of Control combines the usual elements in a romantic suspense: action, conflict, danger and romance. Add in a fabulous location, a female rock star and a hardened Green Beret and you have a powder keg of emotion and sparks. I loved that most of the book is set in Prague where Wick resides, a city I have travelled to and adored. It was fun to visit again in the story. I did struggle with Vonya's character. She is in her late twenties but for much of the book she comes across as significantly younger which I found distracting and did detract from my enjoyment of the story. I love Susan's writing but I felt this one wasn't up to her usual exceptional standard.

Undercover
Pursuit

The only way to get security agent Luke Dekker to a wedding?

An undercover mission as groomsman. He'll bust the groom, a drug cartel heir, before anyone ca
n say "I do." Then Luke can escape all this love and romance nonsense-and the too pretty bridesmaid/agent assigned as his "fiancee" for the weekend. Until Luke discovers that sweet, vulnerable Scarlett Hanson isn't his contact. Isn't an agent. Isn't trained for the high-stakes mission now trapping them both. And worse, Luke's falling for her-which is not part of the assignment.

My take:~

Undercover Pursuit is a fun, albeit unlikely story, of a case of mistaken identity, pseudo bridesmaids and an agent suddenly torn between his mission and keeping an innocent woman safe. Scarlett and Luke are great characters who end up in a boatload of trouble, where danger and heartbreak abound. With plenty of suspense, attraction and peril that doesn't let up, Undercover Pursuit will keep you turning pages in this quick and satisfying read.
