Relz Reviewz Top 10 Reads of 2011

The challenge of compiling a Top 10 list is often overwhelming and frustrating as choosing 10 usually means excluding fantastic reads! Still, I enjoy looking back over my year's reading and selecting books that may be literary masterpieces, books that struck a chord within me or simply one out of the box. Here's my list (in no particular order), sneaking in a few extras by way of a series nomination, and some others at the end of my post that I was loath not to include in some way!

Pompeii: City on Fire by TL Higley with giveaways

Cato and Ariella's journey to faith is meaningful and builds up over time with the patience and love of the community of Pompeii believers. Pompeii: City on Fire is an exceptional book by a supremely talented author whose every release is on my must read list. Be sure she is on yours!

Character Spotlight ~ TL Higley's Ariella

Ariella

T L Higley's lastest novel, Pompeii, is brilliant ~ another foray into ancient times with adventure, intrigue and romance. Grab yourself a copy now!

Brief physical description

Ariella begins the story disguised as a sixteen year old boy, so she’s chopped her hair short and tries to fit in with the larger, bulkier gladiators. As the story progresses, her hair starts to grow out, but she’s still thin, and a bit athletic.

Actor/famous person

I’m a big fan of the TV show Castle, and I think a bit of Kate Beckett (and Rick Castle) crept in to the writing of Pompeii. I kept hearing their smart, fun dialogue in my head as I wrote, and picturing Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion. Ariella’s personality, especially, with all its strength and intensity, reminded me of Kate Beckett’s character.

Strengths and weaknesses

As with all of us, Ariella’s strength can also be a weakness. Her fierce loyalty to nation and family has led to anger toward God and Rome for the atrocities allowed to take place. She channels that anger into her arena-fighting, but when that’s taken from her she must find a way to deal with her anger.

Your inspiration for the character

I love smart, strong women! I’m always finding myself figuring out ways to portray them in societies that did not easily provide opportunities for their strengths. For Ariella, I focused on my own strong desire for freedom and the right to control my destiny, and the ways in which those desires come up against the sovereignty of God, and what that means.

Background to the story

The historical destruction of Pompeii, buried under the ash and lava flow of Mt. Vesuvius’s volcanic eruption, provided more than enough background! It was great fun writing the story, tracing the adventures of my characters as they lived beneath the simmering mountain, unknowing that it was about to erupt. When Pompeii was buried it left so much of Roman life intact, ready to be revealed centuries later, that it was a treat to map out the storylines amidst this historical location, and an even greater adventure to travel there, and explore the streets myself. My love of history and adventure attracted me to Tracy Higley's novels and her thorough research and excellent storytelling have made me a devoted reader!

In 1996, my DH and I visited Pompeii which was amazing so I was really excited when I heard Tracy was writing about the city. I've now had the pleasure of reading Pompeii and I can tell you it is one of her best! Look for it in stores this June from B&H Publishing.

Character Spotlight ~ T L Higley's Cassia & Julian

Cassia & Julian

T L Higley's books are always at the top of my list with her terrific blend of ancient history, adventure, suspense and a touch of romance.

Enjoy this insight into Tracy's latest foray into ancient times:~

Brief physical description

Cassia’s a petite Mediterranean woman, with some uncertain parentage that’s given her reddish streaks in her dark hair. She has a big smile.

Julian is a tall, muscular Roman, who comes across as intense most of the time.

Actor/famous person

I used this stock photo while writing Petra, to help picture Cassia. Although the boy in this photo is younger than Alexander, it helped me imagine her connection to him.

For Julian, maybe a young Bruce Willis… that mischievous little smile that lets you know he’s up to something.

Strengths and weaknesses

Cassia is a strong woman, though at the start of the story, she doesn’t know it. She has always relied on others, and when the story opens she determines that she’ll stand alone to take care of herself and her son. She loves Alexander fiercely and would do anything to protect him. The danger in Petra brings out that protective streak, but it also challenges Cassia to understand how to be part of a community and rely on others, not just herself. Along the way, she also discovers the source of true strength, and the only way she can open herself to love again.

Julian’s mistakes in the past have convinced him that he should remain in the background, not try to lead people. But he’s a born leader, and through the story he learns how to lead from love, not from pride.

Quirk (if any)

Cassia’s a bit headstrong, and when she gets an idea in her head, she tends to go for it, despite the danger or foolishness (including getting self-defense training from a gladiator instructor!)

Julian has a hidden talent for sculpting – an unusual thing for Roman nobility. He puts it to good use in the rock city of Petra.

Your inspiration for the character

While writing Petra, my youngest son was the same age as Alexander, and he was definitely my inspiration for Alexander’s character. So I’d have to say that my inspiration for Cassia was my own emotional ties to my son – throughout the story I felt that same desire to do anything to save him.

For Julian, I think I also drew on parts of myself. I am also driven to make things work and run “my plan,” regardless of the wisdom that might be spoken by God and others. I’m slowly learning, like Julian, to give up control of my own agenda and seek what God wants for my life.

Background to the story

The settings of my stories always inspire me. I travelled to Petra to research this book, and wandering around that city cut into stone cliffs gave me all the inspiration I needed to create Cassia and Julian. Cassia loves the protective feeling of the high cliffs all around her because she’s never felt truly safe. Julian has come to Petra to hide, so the city-in-rock is perfect for him. In some ways, the city created the characters for me.

While researching the history of Petra, I ran across a few “unknowns,” one of which was why the capital city of the Nabatean kingdom peacefully gave itself up to the Roman Empire, when rulership and power were always fought over. I worked backward from there, developing my own tale to explain that momentous event in history.

My take:~

Tracy Higley's exceptional talent for detailed research and fascinating storytelling are both on display in her latest tale, Petra: City of Stone. Taking a break from her brilliant Seven Wonders series, Petra launches her Lost Cities series which will also encompass the cities of Pompeii and Babylon. Combining adventure, suspense, romance and faith, the story of Cassia and Julian is entertaining and thought provoking in equal measure. Be prepared to smell the dust and feel the cool stone walls of this ancient city as Tracy immerses you in political intrigue, pagan ritual and the power of God's presence. Julian, Cassia and Malik are characters that will touch your heart and move your spirit as they face fears, confront malevolent evil and respond to the love of Jesus. Ancient history has no better advocate than Tracy Higley and I cannot recommend her books highly enough!

Character Spotlight ~ TL Higley's Sophia & Bellus

Today the spotlight shines on......................Sophia & Bellus



T L (Tracy) Higley's Seven Wonders series is brilliant! I love the combination of adventure, ancient history and romance and each book is equally fascinating. Be sure to pick up your own copy of Shadow of Colossus, City of the Dead and the newly released Guardian of the Flame.

Sophia

Brief physical description

Sophia’s in her early forties, a bit older than most of the main characters I’ve written. She has spent twenty years hiding from the world and denying her femininity, so she tends to dress a bit manly, and doesn’t bother much with her appearance. All that is about to change, however!

Actor/famous person to play the part

Sophia’s got a bit of attitude about her, and I see her as sort of a young Bette Davis. Tough-talking, but with hidden depth.

Strengths and weaknesses

She’s brilliant and underneath the tough shell, she’s compassionate. Sophia cares deeply about her country of Egypt, about her student Cleopatra, and about her late husband’s fellow scholars who are being sought by Julius Caesar. But her past has hardened her to relationships, and even though she cares deeply, she has a very hard time showing love.

Quirk (if any)

Sophia’s a recluse. She’s been hiding in her lighthouse in Alexandria for the past twenty years, and it takes an army to get her out!

Bellus

Brief physical description

Bellus is a Roman soldier, with all the muscles and wavy dark hair for the part! He’s got a killer smile that Sophia keeps trying to ignore, unsuccessfully it would seem. He’s been through quite a few battles with his general, Julius Caesar, and has become a weathered soldier who is looking for more than a soldier’s life these days.

Actor/famous person to play the part

Well, he’s Spanish, not Italian, but I’d have to say Antonio Banderas.

Strengths and weaknesses

Bellus is an anomaly in the Roman legion – a soldier who hates conflict. He does his job well, but he is a peacemaker at heart, and is baffled by the way Sophia is always trying to bait him into conflict. He has a pure love to give, but hasn’t yet found someone worthy of it.

Quirk (if any)

Bellus is well-read and loves to study philosophy, a trait which sets him apart from his fellow soldiers and makes him all the more intriguing to Sophia.

Your inspiration for both characters

Guardian of the Flame is the Beauty and the Beast story I’ve been wanting to write for years. I love this legendary story, in all its incarnations throughout film and books. Anyone familiar with the story will see the Beast in Sophia and the Beauty in Bellus. There are deeper truths here, too, about why we are drawn to this motif about a love that reaches out to transform us, even before we are worthy of love. I greatly enjoyed unfolding this relationship through the course of the story, watching Sophia change and open herself to love.

Background to the story

Guardian of the Flame is a Seven Wonders Novel, centering around the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The year is 48 BC. Sophia has spent nearly twenty years as the keeper of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, alone in her task and in her heart. But when the wealthy capital of Egypt is invaded by Julius Caesar and his Roman legion, Sophia’s peace is shattered and her lighthouse invaded. The Roman general would steal both her county and its queen, the Greek Cleopatra, and when his military strategy endangers the city’s best scholars and their secret invention, Sophia must discover a way to protect the men. But as the historic war erupts, tangling Sophia in its chaos, she finds that the Roman centurion instructed to invade her lighthouse is also invading her heart.
Now Sophia must do whatever it takes to keep him out – even if it costs her everything.
