Denise Hunter ~ What's Cooking?

Here's my fav apple pie recipe. It was developed for my novel, Sweetwater Gap.
Denise

Aunt Lola’s Blue Ribbon Apple Pie

Flaky Crust

 3/4 cup cake flour

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon white sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon baking powder

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

5 tablespoons shortening

1 egg yolk

2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar

3 cubes ice

1/2 cup cold water

1. Measure butter & shortening onto a plate, put into freezer for about 20 minutes.
2. Measure cake flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, salt and baking powder
into large bowl. Mix.

3. Take 1/2 of the cold butter and 1/2 of the cold shortening, add to dry ingredients cut together
with a pastry blender.
4. Take remainder of the cold butter & cold shortening and cut in very briefly leaving visible pea sized
chunks. Do not over process at this stage!
5. In a measuring cup, mix egg yolk and vinegar together, add ice cubes and water. Let this get
chilled, about 3 to 4 minutes.
6. Sprinkle approximately 4 to 5 tablespoons of this egg, water, vinegar mixture, a little at a time,
over flour mixture, mixing gently with a fork. The key to this is, you do not want a wet dough, and you do not want to over mix. You will not use most of this mixture.
7. Place this dough into plastic wrap or plastic bag, chill in refrigerator for a few minutes. Remove
from refrigerator and roll out on well-floured surface to 1” larger than pie dish, using as little flour as possible to prevent sticking.
8. Place dough in pie dish, turn under edges and flute dough. Set aside.

Apple Pie Filling

6-7 c. Sliced and peeled Granny Smith apples
1 t. Cinnamon

1 t. Lemon Juice

3/4 c. Granulated Sugar

2 T. Flour

Mix all ingredients for filling and place in 9” unbaked pie shell.
Top with Dutch
Apple Topping.
Bake at 425
degrees for 15 minutes then 350 degrees for 40-50 min.

Dutch Apple Topping

1/2 c. Brown sugar
1/2 c. Cold butter

1 c. Flour

Blend with pastry blender or fork and set aside.

Yummy, Denise! It looks like the effort would be well worth it :)

Character Spotlight ~ Myra Johnson's Natalie & Daniel Pearce

Today the spotlight shines on..........Daniel & Natalie Pearce

The Christmas stories for 2009 are starting to release and Myra Johnson's novel, One Imperfect Christmas seems a great place to start :) We hope you enjoy this look behind the scenes at Daniel and Natalie Pearce and pick up Myra's book as we head towards the Christmas season!

Over to you, Myra:~

Brief physical description

Natalie Pearce is a 30-something blond graphic designer who can’t seem to keep her hair out of her eyes. She’s a little out of shape from spending entirely too much time working at her computer.

Her husband, Daniel Pearce, is an average guy (athletic build, brown hair) who coaches junior-high sports and is most often seen in his red Putnam Panthers jacket.

Actor/famous person

Reese Witherspoon would be a good match for Natalie, and I can picture Scott Foley (formerly of The Unit) as Daniel.

AnnaSophia Robb would be perfect as their teenage daughter, Lissa.

Strengths and weaknesses

Natalie’s greatest strength is her commitment to her family, but she carries far too much guilt for something she had no control over, and she lets it get in the way of all her closest relationships. She still loves her husband with all her heart, but when she can’t forgive herself, how can she ever hope to be the wife he deserves?

Daniel is a devoted husband who’d do anything to reunite his family, but his attempts sometimes come across as meddling and manipulative. He’s a good dad who never expected to be raising a headstrong teenage daughter on his own, and sometimes Lissa threatens to get the best of him.

Quirk (if any)

Natalie is constantly having to flick her limp, straight hair out of her eyes. She’s also so focused on her work that she gets jumpy when interrupted. She worries way too much.

Daniel has a bad habit of mutilating the morning paper by snipping out articles from the sports section. He’s also not very handy in the kitchen and tends to clutter the table with all his school and coaching paraphernalia.

Your inspiration for the character

I honestly don’t remember how Natalie and Daniel came about. When I first started imagining this story, they just sort of stepped into it. One early image I had of Natalie, however, is similar to the very straight-laced and uptight sister-in-law character, Gillian Gray (played by Jessica Tuck), from the former TV series Judging Amy.

Background to the story

Natalie Pearce loves Christmas so much that she’d gladly

make it a year-round event—until one January when her mother suffers a massive stroke while taking down the decorations. Natalie blames herself for making excuses not to help. If she’d only been there, maybe her mother could have received the necessary treatment in time to make a difference. Natalie soon allows her guilt to erect a wall between her and everyone she loves, and only her family’s faith and persistence can heal Natalie’s wounded heart and open the way for the restoration of her broken marriage.

Thank you, Myra for sharing about your latest book and its characters :)

On Monday, the spotlight shines on T L Higley's Sophia & Bellus from her latest Seven Wonders novel, Guardian of the Flame.

eye of the god by Ariel Allison

Synopsis:~

Alex and Isaac Weld, the most lucrative jewel thieves in the world, are on a quest to steal the Hope diamond , which according to legend was once the eye of a Hindu idol named Rama Sita. When it was stolen in the 17th century, it is said that the idol cursed all those who would possess it. That won't stop the brilliant and ruthless Weld brothers. However, they are not prepared for Dr. Abigail Mitchell, the beautiful Smithsonian Director, who has her own connection to the Hope Diamond and a deadly secret to keep. Abby committed long ago that she would not serve a god made with human hands, and the "eye of the god" is no exception. Her desire is not for wealth, but for wisdom. She seeks not power, but restoration.

eye of the god takes the fascinating history surrounding the Hope Diamond and weaves it together with a present-day plot to steal the jewel from the Smithsonian Institute.

My take:~

Ariel Allison's first novel is a keeper! Weaving historical fact, long held rumour and innuendo with entertaining characters and intrigue, eye of the god gripped my attention from beginning to end. Abby is a strong, intelligent woman yet crippled by the emotional pain of her father's rejection. Alex is bad to the bone, selfishly pursuing the adrenaline rush as much as the cash, from being a freelance thief as well as a ladies' man. When their paths intersect over the magnificent Hope diamond, sparks fly as everything they have ever believed about themselves and their choices in life are challenged. This top notch novel has a killer ending, which will leave you clamouring for more from this talented author.

Sneak peek at Francine Rivers' Her Mother's Hope

It has been quite a wait for a new book from Francine Rivers but you only have to hang in there until March, 2010 when it releases from Tyndale House. I have no doubt, Her Mother's Hope will be worth the wait!

Enjoy!

The first in an epic two-book saga by beloved author Francine Rivers, this sweeping story explores the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters over several generations.

Near the turn of the 20th century, fiery Marta leaves Switzerland determined to find life on her own terms. Her journey takes her through Europe and finally lands her with children and husband in tow in the central valley of California. Marta’s experiences convince her that only the strong survive.

Hildie, Marta’s oldest daughter, has a heart to serve others, and her calling as a nurse gives her independence, if not the respect of her mother. Amid the drama of WWII, Hildie marries and begins a family of her own. She wants her daughter never to doubt her love—but the challenges of life conspire against her vow.

Each woman is forced to confront her faulty but well-meaning desire to help her daughter find her God-given place in the world.

Meltdown by Chuck Holton

Synopsis:~

The global war on terror has reached catastrophic proportions, leading the U.S. Special Operations EOD team-Task Force Valor - to Chernobyl, where ghosts of past disasters are nothing compared to the nuclear nightmare about to unfold.

With CIA Agent Mary "Phoenix" Walker heading her first Special Ops mission and Master Sergeant Bobby Sweeney fighting demons on and off the battlefield, Task Force Valor races to stop a terrorist threat in the Ukraine before Europe is turned into a radioactive wasteland.

But when the terror reaches American shores, the team is powerless to help until they can save themselves. And when they finally track down the source of the chaos, what they find is worse than anything they could have imagined.

My take:~

Chuck Holton’s third Task Force Valor novel continues his tradition of writing high octane military thrillers stamped with authenticity from his years as a US Army Ranger. Chuck chooses unique settings for his novels, this time Chernobyl, Ukraine, and his research trip has provided him with fascinating and sometimes frightening insight. The writing seemed a bit choppy, jumping from one location and character to another, yet I imagine that is what a military operation is like - constantly having to change pace and adjust to circumstances as they happen. Action and danger abound in equal measure as Master Sergeant Bobby Sweeney and CIA Agent Mary Walker work together hoping to prevent a nuclear fallout on US soil.

Character Spotlight ~ Ariel Allison's Abby Mitchell & Alex Weld

Today the spotlight shines on Abby Mitchell & Alex Weld

Ariel Allison has made a sparkling (pardon the pun!) fiction debut with her novel of action and suspense, eye of the god. Based on the actual mystery surrounding the Hope diamond, it is full of intrigue, historical detail and i
s a heart pounding, contemporary tale of an overachieving woman, a ruthless thief and a mysterious figure who will stop at nothing to achieve his goal.

Enjoy this look at Abby & Alex, through Ariel's eyes!

Over to you, Ariel:~

Abby Mitchell

Brief physical description

Abby has the classic smart girl syndrome. She cleans up well but doesn’t realize how pretty she really is. And in her profession (Director of the Smithsonian Institute’s Natural Programs) her beauty can work against her. So she downplays her appearance in order to be taken seriously in the academic field. She has big brown eyes, shoulder-length brown hair and very fair skin with a smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose. And she’s quite tall, nearly six foot when wearing heels.

When I began crafting Abby in my mind, I discovered this picture of Hillary Swank that perfectly illustrates how she appears in my mind:

Strengths and weaknesses

Abby is brilliant and courageous, but just like many women, she has a propensity to manipulate her circumstance to reach her desired outcome. She wants to be the puppet master, the one who controls the actions of others, but despite her maneuvering, she can not force people to love her: neither her father, nor Alex Weld.

Quirk (if any)

Abby struggles deeply with the idea of God the Father since her relationship with her earthly father is broken. And yet she is drawn to Him through the different churches, chapels, and cathedrals she sees on her travels. So she takes pictures of them and hangs them in her living room, all the while keeping God at arms length.

Alex Weld

Brief physical description

Alex is trouble in a suit. He’s the guy your mother warned you about: the honey-tongued viper who will charm your socks off and then break your heart. And it doesn’t help that he is handsome in that not-too-cute-but-really-manly way. Dark brown hair. Blue eyes. And he’s got a strong jaw with a five o’clock shadow.

Gerard Butler is the personification of Alex Weld.

Rel:~ Oh my, yes! Gerard is exactly how I imagined Alex :)

Strengths and weaknesses

Alex is fearless and confident. But the truth is, he’s a jerk. And he only cares about himself. He uses women and then he tosses them away like day old bread. Until he meets Abby, that is. And then his entire world falls apart.

Quirk (if any)

Alex is a thief, not just of jewels and paintings, but hearts and lives. But his well-armed defenses crumble when he finds himself on the receiving end of loss.

Your inspiration for the characters

With Abby, I was intrigued by the idea of a woman who would do anything to gain her father’s love – even if it meant betraying her own values.

And Alex was formed around the history of the Hope Diamond. What kind of man becomes a professional thief? Why isn’t he afraid of the legendary curse surrounding the jewel?

Background to the story

In the Spring of 1995, I stumbled across an article in Life Magazine on the Hope Diamond. The two-page spread gave a brief history of the legendary curse, and I knew instantly that it should be a novel. Being the curious gal that I am, I dug around and was surprised to find that although most people were familiar with the curse, no one had done anything with the concept. So I began researching and writing. That was fourteen years ago this spring.

Thanks Ariel ~ I'm hooked and can't wait for more of Abby and Alex's
adventures!

Lonestar Secrets by Colleen Coble

Synopsis:~

Shannon Astor returns to southwest Texas to serve as the town’s veterinarian, believing she’s finally found the space to get her life back on track.

Then she catches a glimpse of Jack MacGowan, the man who ruined her life years before. But even more shocking is the sight of Jack’s five-year-old daughter Faith, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Shannon’s own daughter Kylie. Is it possible that their similarities could be more than just coincidence? Could Faith be the daughter that Shannon has believed to be dead for all these years?

As the truth emerges, everyone is forced to take sides--in a story with a heart as big as Texas.

My take:~

Colleen Coble is back in the saddle in West Texas in her latest contemporary romance, Lonestar Secrets. Skilful character development and enticing romantic tension are hallmarks of Colleen’s writing and clearly evident in this story. While I found the somewhat implausible plot a little distracting, Colleen’s solid writing, appealing characters and intriguing twists held my focus to the end. Colleen’s books never fail to provide hours of enjoyment and escape and I always look forward to her next offerings.

Barbara and her son set out to find Emily before Detective Kent Harlan arrests her for a crime he is sure she committed. Fearing for Emily’s life, Barbara maintains her daughter’s innocence. But does she really know her anymore? Meanwhile, Kent has questions of his own. His gut tells him that this is a case of an addict killing for drugs, but as he gets to know Barbara, he begins to hope he’s wrong about Emily.

The panic level rises as the mysteries intensify: Did Emily’s obsession with drugs lead her to commit murder—or is she another victim of a cold-blooded killer?

Double Cross by James David Jordan & Open Giveaway

Synopsis:~

Raised by a father who was a former Special Forces officer, Taylor is beautiful and brilliant and knows how to take care of herself. But she is haunted by her past and the sacrifice her father made to save her from a brutal rape when she was seventeen. After a controversial stint in the Secret Service, she has become the most prominent private security specialist in America. When she discovers the body of a former client's top assistant, all the evidence points to embezzlement and suicide. But Taylor has no way of knowing that her mother, who ran out when Taylor was nine, is about to reappear and lead her down a twisting path of danger and deceit. It's a road that won't end until they reach the spot where Taylor's father died-where Taylor learns some sacrifices can never be earned.

My take:~

Forsaken was one of my favourite stories of 2008 and James David Jordan has made the wait for another Taylor Pasbury tale well worth it in the sequel, Double Cross. Attracting trouble like a bee to honey, Taylor continues to struggle with the fallout from Simon Mason’s death while searching for an extortionist and caring for Simon’s daughter, Kacey. Action packed with an emotional punch, Double Cross combines the elements of a thriller with a contemporary woman’s search for love and meaning. It is a credit to Jordan’s skill as a writer that he makes Taylor so accessible despite her unusual career choice and ability to place any man in a choke hold! Taylor is one of the most complex and engaging characters you will find and I can’t wait for more of her story to unfold in future offerings from this author.

Character Spotlight ~ James David Jordan's Taylor Pasbury

Today the spotlight shines on.......................Taylor Pasbury

James David Jordan has created one of my favourite characters in Taylor Pasbury. Edgy, alone and emotional with the finely honed instincts of a well trained former secret service agent, Taylor is unique and has so much more to tell us!

Enjoy this insider's look into what makes Taylor tick!

Thanks, Jim:~

Brief physical description

Taylor Pasbury is long, lean, beautiful and athletic, with wavy auburn hair. She is twenty-nine years old.

The best representation of Taylor is on my book covers. Think of a more human and less super-heroish Lara Croft.

Strengths and weaknesses

Trained in self-defense and marksmanship by her Special Forces father, Taylor really knows how to take care of herself. She's cool under pressure, and she's the person most of us would like to have standing next to us in a life-threatening crisis. On the other hand, her personal life is a wreck. She lacks self-confidence, she's a binge drinker, and she makes bad choices in men.

Quirk (if any)

Taylor is so sentimental that she cries at the drop of a hat, which is totally out of character with her "tough-gal" exterior. Also, she's not a particularly religious person, which makes her an unusual narrator for a Christian novel.

Your inspiration for the character

I wanted to create an immensely flawed heroine with enough insecurities and quirks that we're drawn to her despite her flaws. I also wanted a generally non-religious person to tell my stories, to bring an outsider's view to the faith issues I raise.

Background to the story

When the top assistant of Taylor's former client is found dead after she's caught embezzling money, it appears to be an obvious suicide. But a few things don't add up, and Taylor investigates. When Taylor's mother, who ran out when Taylor was nine, appears at her doorstep, Taylor's investigation turns into a search for the truth about her own past. It's a search in which her mother quickly becomes entangled. It doesn't end until Taylor returns to the place where her dad sacrificed his life to save her from a brutal crime when she was a teenager. That's where she learns that some sacrifices can never be earned.

An Eye for An Eye by Irene Hannon

Having a sniper disrupt an unexpected reunion with his teenage sweetheart was the last thing Special Agent Mark Sanders anticipated. For it to happen while he was on enforced leave from his FBI Hostage Rescue Team after his involvement in a tragic shooting, impacts him more than he is willing to admit. Emily Lawson has immersed herself in work over the past five years, with little time for socialising, let alone pursuing a relationship. Mark's sudden reappearance in her life revives tender memories of their summer romance twenty years earlier but her heartbreaking loss in the intervening period, ensures Emily won't open the door to anything more than friendship.

Hidden, meticulous and out for vengeance, a stalker has a victim in mind, but will Mark and the FBI decipher the clues before the killer tries again?

Irene Hannon's decision to turn her rather experienced hand to romantic suspense, is one readers will be ever grateful for. Establishing her credentials in the first Heroes of Quantico novel, Against All Odds, she has left no doubt as to her talent with An Eye for An Eye. You will be hooked from the first chapter with an explosive start, followed by brilliant pacing through the rest of the story with the perfect balance of suspense, action and romance. The stalker and the target remain ambiguous throughout much of the story, providing plenty of engagement for the reader and a well drawn and developed antagonist. The faith element is direct and honest and a key element of the tale. My only disappointment is the long wait until Special Agent Nick Bradley's story, In Harm's Way, releasing in April, 2010!
