Getting to know Sharon Hinck

I've decided you can tell a lot about people by the way they write, both within in the pages of a book and via email across oceans! Sharon Hinck's compassion, deep faith and joyful heart spill over in to her novels, emails and newsletters.

Interviewing Sharon was loads of fun so read below to discover more about her
career aspirations as a child, her favourite ice cream flavour and the bravest thing she has ever done!

Sharon also shares about her latest books, Symphony of Secrets from Bethany House and The Restorer's Journey from NavPress. Both books are available now!

Here's Sharon:~

If you could have chosen your own name , what would it be?

I’ve been enjoying your Aussie nickname for me – Shazza. J

Your first pet’s name?

Charlie the parakeet.

Did you have a special toy that went everywhere with you when you were young? Please describe.

When I was young, I was a bookworm, and usually had a book with me everywhere I went.

Rel: A woman after my own heart!!!

If you could be an animal for one day, what would you be and why?

A tropical fish. I’ve had a few opportunities to snorkel, and one pathetic attempt at scuba diving (I was terrible at it). But I loved swimming through coral reefs and would love to do it without needing to breathe.

If you could meet a famous person, who would it be?
Maybe Joan of Arc

My hubby and I visited this statue of Joan when we were overseas - does that count?!

If you were stranded on a desert island what one object would you want with you? (Besides your Bible of course)

My husband. Wait. Can he count as an object? If not, I’d want a nice cozy bed. I’ve watched Survivor. I don’t think I’d like sleeping in caves or on bug-infested bam
boo platform.

If you co
uld only have one favourite food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Mashed potatoes and gravy

What's your favourite ice cream flavour?

Cinnamon ice
cream is great with apple pie, but Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia (with wonderful dark chocolate chunks) is another favorite. Rel, you’re making me hungry. I’ll need to stop answering questions and go get a snack.

You Americans sure have some interesting flavours!

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A secret agent, a ballerina, an actor, and a writer. I’ve done all but one. You’ll have to guess which.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Why, to visit you in Australia, of course! Although I also loved the island of Kauai when I was able to visit Hawaii once. And I’d love to see the beautiful mountains of New Zealand.

My folks just returned from a holiday in New Zealand, pictured here! It is a beautiful country :)

Besides God, who has influenced you the most?

My husband. His example of selfless love, depth of faith, and quiet steadfastness inspires me daily.

What's your favourite book?

Perelandra by C.S. Lewis. He did a beautiful job of helping me understand an old story by presenting it in a new setting. And there is a scene of worship that lifted my heart in worship while I read it and gave me a glimpse of heaven.

What part of your daily routine do you enjoy most?

My early morning cup of tea. Chatting with my husband at the end of the day. Taking walks, especially when I can talk one of the kids into coming with me. Family dinner – when we all manage to be there at the same time. My quiet time. My writing time. Did you mean I had to pick only ONE part of my daily routine that I enjoy most? LOL!

What's your favourite movie?

American in Paris. I love musicals, and Gene Kelly is a favorite.

Where's the most interesting place you have been?

The Wanchai district on Hong Kong island.

What's your most fervent prayer?

That I would learn how to love the way Christ loves.

What's the bravest thing you've ever done?

Natural childbirth – four times.

What gift have you received that you will always treasure?

The hand-sequined Christmas stocking that my Granny made for me, with a backwards “N” (which always makes me smile because it reminds me of her Russian background).

What is your favourite Bible verse (or "one" of your favourites) and what does it mean to you?

2 Cor. 4:7 –7 “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” I love that God is able to use flawed, ordinary people as a way to pour out His grace to the world.

How did your husband propose to you?

After talking to my father, he took me to a bridge in a little Japanese tea-garden and formally asked me there. J

What was the best advice you received on marriage before you were married?

Marriage is a three-fold union. As the man and woman each draw closer to God, they draw closer to each other.

Great advice. We had Ecclesiates 4:12 embossed on our wedding invitations :)

Symphony of Secrets

Your love of music shines through in this story – was it fun to write?

A blast! I enjoy people who are intense about their calling – and a bit outside the parameters of “normal.” And I am fascinated by the drive that causes musicians to commit so many hours to practice in a desire for rare moments of artistic transcendence.

Do we see a bit of you in the compassionate but slightly neurotic flautist, Amy Johnson?!

I hope I’m not quite as prickly with others as Amy…and I don’t try to solve imaginary mysteries (anymore), but I fear I’m often self-absorbed like she is, and I definitely understand the deep drive to express something through the arts and the way it can consume a person if they aren’t careful.

What do you hope readers take away from this story?

In addition to some fun, light entertainment, I hope people absorb the truth that God loves us enough to come meet with us in the ways we understand – and loves us enough to pursue us.

Loved this story, Shazza!

The Restorer’s Journey

Please share the inspiration for this amazing series

There were several elements that meshed together for me… my love for the fantasy genre, my desire to give a contemporary woman’s perspective to the story, my love for sword fights, my fascination with the Biblical character of Deborah (and the other Judges – and the way God worked in that time of history). I also wanted to explore my questions about how to endure when the Christian life, or the roles God calls us to, are much harder than expected. What does deeper surrender look like?

In Restorer’s Journey, Susan is captured and she plunges into overwhelming despair. How did you write such emotionally draining scenes?

I’ll confess, it was difficult to write. I drew from some lengthy and painful challenges in my own life – and for the sake of friends who understand suffering, wanted to make sure I didn’t gloss over what that experience can be like. It did help that I got to keep switching to the more adventurous and swashbuckling storyline of Jake.

You wrote from the point of view of a mum and a teenage boy – was one more difficult than the other?

Jake’s point of view was fun – because I could tap into all the idealism, confidence, and occasional stupidity and disillusionment that I experienced at that age. However, I did need to keep an eye on how I portrayed the voice of his age and gender—which was much easier with Susan, since I’m a mom (or “mum” as you say – LOL!) and her voice comes more naturally to me).

What do you hope readers take away from this story?

No matter how confusing, painful, and difficult the journey, it is still a good idea to follow the God who loves us. He has purposes He may not reveal to us in full detail, but we can trust He is with us in every dark place, and isn’t done with our story.

Yep...you did achieve that and more :) Amazing and powerful reading!

Will you return to Lyric any time in the future?

I have more stories in my heart and mind for the various characters, and would love it if God would open the door for more one day.

Hoping and praying...... :)

Thanks so much for letting me come visit!

I love hearing from readers – and folks can visit me at www.sharonhinck.com and explore the various fun pages, including my blog.

Thanks so much Sharon - it has been both a pleasure and a privilege :)

Book Club with Splitting Harriet & Tamara Leigh

Friday night was Book Club night at my place and we had a fabulous time discussing the engaging Splitting Harriet, eating Jelly Bellys (read the book to know why!) and topped off the night with a wonderful chat to author Tamara Leigh!

Tamara is a real sweetie and we had much fun discussing Harri and her quirks, how Maddox McCray was "born", Tamara's wonderful story of coming to faith and a tantalising look at her upcoming release Faking Grace and a new series for 2009.

If you are involved in a book club, I really recommend you get some authors on the phone. It really adds so much to your discussion and you know, they are writers, so no need to worry about them not having much to say - LOL!!! Alternatively, especially for us Aussies, I have also organised for authors to answer my members' questions via email which we read out on the night. All great stuff!

Thanks so much to all my fellow book clubbers and especially Tamara - already looking forward to when we talk again :)

Saving Sarah Cain ~ movie review

Frustrated by writer's block, newspaper columnist Sarah Cain (Lisa Pepper) is lacking inspiration and her neurotic boss, Bill (Academy Award Nominee Elliot Gould) demands she shape up or ship out. While pouring out her woes to her patient and devoted boyfriend Bryan, Sarah receives the shocking news that her Amish sister has passed away.

Sarah arrives in Pennsylvania in time for the funeral and meets her five nieces and nephews for the first time. Sarah is shocked to learn that she is the children's legal guardian and her self-absorbed life is about to change. Returning with the children to her modern apartment in Portland, Sarah fails to think through the implications for the grieving children. Attending school in the city, the children face new temptations and experiences, while the eldest, Lyddie (Abigail Mason) struggles to maintain their Plain ways and their deeply held faith.

As the cultural divide begins to shatter their solidarity and when a betrayal strikes deep, Sarah and the children discover that forgiveness and family are worth more than she ever imagined.

Beverly Lewis's novel The Redemption of Sarah Cain has translated well to film with Michael Landon Jr ably directing a great cast. Lisa Pepper portrays the self focused Sarah Cain well and Elliott Gould is great fun as her acerbic newspaper editor. Abigail Mason does an exceptional job as Lyddie, trying to be both mother and sister to her siblings, showing both strength and vulnerability to perfection. Bailee Madison as little Hannah, the youngest child, steals the show with her mischievous smile. The other children are engaging and despite occasions when their Amish accent wavers, they are convincing in their roles.

Saving Sarah Cain is a delightful film suitable for all the family to enjoy, celebrating the love of family and the healing power of forgiveness. The scenery is magical and the Plain life lovingly portrayed. Special features are well worth viewing taking you behind the scenes of the movie and Beverly Lewis' thoughts on the transition of her novel to film.

Forevermore by Cathy Marie Hake

Synopsis:~

Like a dandelion in the wind, Hope Ladley blows from one farm to the next, helping cook for the field hands during the harvest. Illiterate and often twisting clichés and Bible verses into mind-boggling observations, Hope leaves widower Jakob Stauffer baffled by her unconventional ways. But her sunny disposition and unstinting love make changes of a different kind around the place. His little daughter and the pregnant sister he's shielding from an abusive husband adore Hope, and things are getting accomplished even if Hope's methods are unique.

Then Jakob's brother-in-law shows up and threatens the newfound peace and happiness of the farm. With Jakob's future uncertain and his heart tangled, can the farmer convince Hope to take root and remain as his wife?

My take:~

Cathy Marie Hake's offerings are always a delightful read with engaging characters, a faithful storyline with unique twists, sprinkled with humour and joy. Forevermore is no exception and I enjoyed my escape to Texas in 1891 with the flightly yet compassionate Hope, stalwart Jakob and fearful Annie. Cathy Marie Hake combines all the right ingredients for a prairie romance while adding extra icing on the cake with a more complex storyline and imperfect characters. If you love historical romance, be sure to add Cathy's books to your wish list.

The Voice by Bill Myers & US/Canadian Giveaway

Synopsis:~

When Charlie Madison's 13-year old niece barges into his life, he is suddenly forced to use the Special Forces training he retired long ago. Her parents created a computer program that recorded the actual voice of God—and a radical religious group kidnapped them to gain control of the technology.

Now Charlie must come out of retirement to rescue both the parents and the program, tapping into a lifetime of experience he has tried so hard to forget. There is far more at stake than the safety of the parents or even religion. If the voice of God created reality, it can destroy it. If controlled, it would become a weapon of mass destruction making all others obsolete. The trio fights against various religious powers and major governments... until the program is discovered and played back with unimaginable results.

My take:~

In all my years of reading, The Voice is my first Bill Myers book but I can assure you it won't be my last.

Bill Myers has created an intriguing and energetic story full of characters to engage with and enjoy. Charlie's austere demeanour hides a broken spirit which is slowly brought back to life by his precocious and entertaining niece, Jasmine, the beautiful and friendly Lisa who is hiding more than her skill with a Glock, and a mission that could change the foundations of the world - literally! If that isn't enough, this is a book that is sure to get you thinking on matters of God and His supernatural power.

Fast paced and edgy with unique characters and a doozy of a storyline, The Voice is a cracking good read for men and women.

Available now from FaithWords.

For your chance to win a copy of The Voice, please meet the following requirements:~

1. Have a US or Canadian mailing addy;

2. Post a comment by midnight Thursday 8th May; and

3. If you had to choose, which of the Forces would you join - Army, Navy or Air Force?

FIRST Day Blog Tour of Finding Hollywood Nobody By Lisa Samson

It is May FIRST, time for the FIRST Blog Tour! (Join our alliance! Click the button!) The FIRST day of every month we will feature an author and his/her latest book's FIRST chapter!

Today's feature author is:

and her book:

Finding Hollywood Nobody

Navpress Publishing Group (February 15, 2008)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Lisa Samson is the author of twenty books, including the Christy Award-winning Songbird. Apples of Gold was her first novel for teens

These days, she's working on Quaker Summer, volunteering at Kentucky Refugee Ministries, raising children and trying to be supportive of a husband in seminary. (Trying . . . some days she's downright awful. It's a good thing he's such a fabulous cook!) She can tell you one thing, it's never dull around there.

Other Novels by Lisa:

Hollywood Nobody, Straight Up, Club Sandwich, Songbird, Tiger Lillie, The Church Ladies, Women's Intuition: A Novel, Songbird, The Living End

Visit her at her website.

AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:

Chapter One

Hollywood Nobody: Sunday, June 4

Well, Nobodies, it's a wrap! Jeremy's latest film, yet another remake of The Great Gatsby, now titled Green Light, has shipped out from location and will be going into postproduction. Look for it next spring in theaters. It may just be his most widely distributed film yet with Annette Bening on board. Toledo Island will never be the same after that wacky bunch filled in their shores.

Today's Hottie Watch: Seth Haas has moved to Hollywood. An obscure film he did in college, Catching Regina's Heels (a five-star film in my opinion), was mentioned on the Today show last week. He was interviewed on NPR's Fresh Air. Hmm. Could it be he'll receive the widespread acclaim he deserves before the release of Green Light? For his sake and the film's, I hope so.

Rehab Alert: I've never hidden the fact that I don't care for bratty actress Karissa Bonano, but she just checked into rehab for a cocaine addiction. Her maternal grandfather, Doug Fairmore, famous in the forties for swashbuckling and digging up clues, made a public statement declaring the Royal Family of Hollywood was "indeed throwing all of our love, support, and prayers behind Karissa." The man must be a thousand years old by now. This isn't Ms. Bonano's first stint in rehab, but let's hope it's her last. Even I'm not too catty to wish her well in this battle. But I'm as skeptical as the next person. In Hollywood, rehab is mostly just a fad.

Today's Quote: "It's a scientific fact. For every year a person lives in Hollywood, they lose two points of their IQ." Truman Capote

Today's Rant: SWAG, or Party Favors. Folks, do you ever wonder what's inside those SWAG bags the stars get? Items which, if sold, could feed a third-world country for a week! And have you noticed how the people who can afford to buy this stuff seem to get it for free? I'm just sayin'. So here's my idea, stars: Refuse to take these high-priced bags o' stuff and gently suggest the advertisers give to a charitable organization on behalf of the movie, the stars, the whoever. Like you need another cell phone.

Today's Kudo: Violette Dillinger will be appearing on the MTV Video Music Awards in August. She told Hollywood Nobody she's going to prove to this crowd you can be young, elegant, decent, and still rock out. Go Violette!

Summer calls. Later!

NavPress and the Christy Awards

The Navigator's at Monash University in Melbourne helped me transition to University many years ago and my hubby and I ended up on staff for a number of years so I was delighted to hear their fiction books have done really well this year grabbing 5 Christy nominations.

Enjoy reading the News Advisory below and contact Kathleen Campbell, Campbell Public Relations, 877-540-6022; kcampbell@thecompletesolution.com if you would like to know more about NavPress books.

News Advisory, Wednesday, April 30, 2008—Colorado Springs, CO—NavPress has surprised the publishing world with an astonishing five finalists selected to compete for the most coveted prize in Christian fiction—The Christy Awards. NavPress, publisher of The Message Bible, is best known for discipleship and spiritual-growth materials.

“NavPress has really taken the genre by surprise this year,” says Marketing Director, Jessica Chappell. “I would expect five finalists from a large publisher that specializes in fiction, but this is exceptional, and we are thrilled to see it happen.”

The NavPress finalists for 2007 are as follows: For First Novel, Demon: A Memoir by Tosca Lee; in the Visionary category, The Restorer by Sharon Hinck; and locking up the Young Adult category the three finalists are all NavPress authors: Hollywood Nobody by Lisa Samson, In Between by Jenny B. Jones, and Maggie Come Lately by Michelle Buckman.

“We have had a few second-and third-place-winning novels in the past,” says Dan Benson, NavPress Editorial Director, “but 2007 was a banner year for our fiction titles. Our authors are outstanding storytellers, and each of these novels is a great read especially for the summer fiction-buying crowd."

When asked if more quality fiction is in store for NavPress, Mike Miller, the new Executive Publisher, simply smiles and says, “We’ll just have to wait and see. After 30 years in publishing we have never been known for fiction and it hasn’t really been our strong suit. This is quite a pleasant surprise.”

Since 1978 NavPress has been primarily responsible for publishing discipleship and spiritual growth books and materials, Bibles, and bible study guides as a part of the ministry of The Navigators. The Navigators is an interdenominational, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people grow spiritually, to know Christ and to make Him known as they look to Him and His Word to chart their lives.

Today, tens of thousands of people worldwide are coming to know and grow in Jesus Christ through the various ministries of The Navigators. As an international ministry approximately 4,000 Navigators now serve over 64 nationalities in more than 100 countries.

CFBA Blog Tour of The Big Picture by Jenny B Jones

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

The Big Picture

(NavPress Publishing Group April 15, 2008)

by

Jenny B. Jones

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jenny B. Jones is the author of A Katie Parker Production series. The other books in the series are
In Between and On The Loose. Though now an adult, she still relates to the trauma and drama of teen life. She is thrilled to see her writing dreams come true, as her previous claim to fame was singing the Star Spangled Banner at a mule-jumping championship. (The mules were greatly inspired.)

Jenny resides in Arkansas, where, as a teacher, she hangs out with teens on a regular basis.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Sometimes there’s a fine line between comedy and tragedy—and Katie Parker is walking it.

School is winding down for the summer but Katie Parker is having a bad day. After leaving the drive-in, where her imploding love life was the main attraction, Katie arrives home to a big surprise on the Scott's front porch.

Her mother, Bobbie Ann Parker, a former convict and recovering addict, wants to take Katie away from her family, friends, and church. Now Katie's life will be changed by a series of dramatic choices as she struggles to understand what family and home really means.

Katie is forced to walk away from In Between, leaving behind a family who loves her, a town drive-in to save, and a boyfriend who suddenly can’t take his eyes off his ex. When the life her mother promised begins to sink faster than one of Maxine’s stuffed bras, Katie knows she needs to rely on God to keep it together.

But where is he in all this? Can Katie survive a chaotic life with her mother—and one without the Scotts? And if God is there, will he come through before it’s too late?

A Katie Parker Production series offers teen girls real-world fiction balanced by hope and humor. The The Big Picture helps us realize that the difficult chapters in our journey are only part of God's big story for our lives.

You can read the first chapter HERE

"A heroine to love. Jones just gets better with every book, and The Big Picture is her best one yet."
~BARBARA WARREN, author of The Gathering Storm

A Promise for Tomorrow

Randall House Publishing

ISBN 13: 978-0-89265-563-2

Paperback; $12.99; 208 page

In the mid 1950’s small town, Sugar Hill, Alabama was quiet and sleepy in every way imaginable. Fannie Lea Rockwell has few pressing concerns, save for her dreadful nickname, Flea. Few concerns that is until she crosses paths with Mr. Boyd, Sugar Hill’s resident hermit and mysterious citizen. Mr. Boyd lives across the railroad tracks deep in the woods and his anti-social tendencies only fuel the gossip fire; its rumored that he keeps his daughter, Mavis, locked in the attic all day and that he brews moonshine in the woods behind his house.

One day when Flea and her brother, Rand, trespass on Mr. Boyd’s property to get a better view of Mavis, they encounter more than they bargained for. A grip around her waist, a knife to her throat and a threat on her life are quite enough to convince Flea to never return. His breath which smelled of rotting cabbage only served to fuel her fear.

As she unravels the mystery behind Mavis Boyd, Flea uncovers secrets of other Sugar Hill residents and soon discovers how little she actually knows her neighbors. Soon Flea will find herself in a life-or-death situation where she places herself in danger to save the life of someone more helpless than herself.

Q&A with Sara DuBose, author of A Promise for Tomorrow

Q. Everyone seems to be affected by today's tenuous economic environment. From housing to jobs, it seems there's always bad news on the 5 o'clock news. How can you 'live expectantly' in these uncertain times?

A. Sometimes our children show us how to live expectantly. Years ago I lifted my sick three-year-old from her bed and plopped us both in the rocking chair. Cherie felt hot and clammy. I was hot with fatigue and anxiety, having nursed sick people for over a month. I said, “Honey, I’m so sorry you are not feeling good.”

Sensing my frustration, Cherie pushed the hair back from my eyes and replied, “Dats all right, mama. We pray about it, den you won’t haf to worry.”

Can three or four-year-old children show us the way home? They can when our home is with the heart of God who said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). So, whether it’s personal, financial, or even a global crisis, the Christian won’t find rest in another news report of the latest terrorist attack, freeway accident, or stock market slide. No, lasting peace is only found in Christ who lifts us from our sick bed of worry, pushes the hair back from our eyes, and rocks us for awhile.

Q. Worry seems to be the opposite of 'living expectantly,' but isn't some worry necessary for day-to-day life?

A. Yes, some anxiety or tension is warranted. We want to be alert when we pull into a six-lane highway at rush hour, take a test, or interview for a job. Above all, we want to be anxious to please God. As we begin to recognize and appreciate a holy, sovereign, just and merciful God we begin to lose our fear and anxiety over other people, our needs, adversities, or any uncertainties of life. The closer we draw to the Lord the further we withdraw from worry and fear.

Q. In A Promise for Tomorrow, Flea learns a lot about God's promises to His children. What can we derive from His promises for tomorrow?

A. Flea observes, and later interacts, with a neighbor who has become a victim of her circumstances. By applying what she has learned from her father and through her own spiritual growth she is able to offer a compassionate reprimand. Flea also learns the truth of Proverbs 17:22: “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” As the story progresses, Flea begins to understand a basic principle. Life is hard, but it can still be lived with hope.

Q. I've heard it said that faith is the opposite of fear, but many times Christians feel afraid even though they have faith that God will deliver them from the situation at hand. How do you balance faith and fear?

A. Yes, Christians are sometimes afraid just as Christ’s disciples were fearful during a storm (Luke 8: 22-25). In fact, those guys panicked as the squall continued and the boat began to sink. After bailing the water with little results, they called to their sleeping Savior. Three words from Jesus and the winds and waves obeyed.

“Quiet! Be still!” Then came the questions. “Why are you so afraid? Where is your faith?”

I think we should take note of these questions. Jesus didn’t say, “You have no faith,” but he did tell them to exercise it. As you and I apply our faith, fear must leave because faith and fear don’t belong in the same mind. Alarm, fear, and worry should never rule our lives, not when Jesus is in the boat with us.
