CFBA Blog Tour of The Reluctant Cowgirl by Christine Lynxwiler

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

The Reluctant Cowgirl

Barbour Publishing (April 2009)

by

Christine Lynxwiler

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Christine lives with her husband and two precious daughters in the foothills of the beautiful Ozark Mountains in her home state of Arkansas. Her greatest earthly joy is her family and, aside from doing God’s will, spending time with them is her top priority.

She recently took a break from writing romance to pen a Christmas story with a twist. Her Mom Lit novella, My True Love Gave to Me, is part of a 2 in 1 anthology from Barbour entitled All Jingled Out. It’s also included in Simply Christmas, a 4 in 1 Barbour anthology. One of my holiday highlights was seeing Simply Christmas at Sam’s Club a few weeks before Christmas.

She has written two other novellas, both romance, which are included in Barbour anthologies, City Dreams, and Prairie County Fair and a serial for the Heartsong Presents book club newsletter – The Carousel Horse. The Carousel Horse can be read in its entirety on the Heartsong website, and you can read excerpts from all of her other books on her website, HERE

In 2003, Christine was honored by being voted #2 Favorite New Author by the Heartsong Presents Book Club members!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Actress Crystal McCord gave up the closeness of her big family in order to make a name for herself on the New York City stage. But when life in the Big Apple turns sour, she follows a country road back to her parents Arkansas ranch.

The last thing she expects to find in cowboy country is a new leading man. Still, she can't help but imagine handsome rancher Jeremy Buchanan in the role.

Unfortunately, Jeremy's been burned by Crystal's type before. Or has he? Every time he thinks he knows her, the multi-faceted woman surprises him. Will the reluctant pair allow their hearts to guide them, or will their common stubborn pride keep them miles apart?

Not far in but enjoying it as I have all Christine's books. Look for my review soon :)

She's In A Better Place by Angela Hunt

Synopsis:~

Jennifer Graham is struggling to make ends meet while running the Fairlawn Funeral Home, raising two children, and studying for her national board exam. Her work takes on a new dimension when Gerald Huffman, her assistant and mentor, reveals that he has a serious illness. When she learns that he and his daughter haven't spoken in years, Jen decides to help them reconcile . . . but things don't go exactly as she planned.

Jennifer is longing for stability in her life . . . but she soon discovers that life isn't stagnant; it's always changing. Once again, the mortuary is a setting for lessons of laughter, love, and life.

My take:~

Angela Hunt's tagline is Expect the Unexpected but when I pick up one of her books, what I expect is a stimulating and engaging read which will give my emotions a healthy workout. Angela "predictability" met my very high expectations of her writing talent in She's In A Better Place, the third and final instalment in her Fairlawn series!

With her consummate skill with the written word, Angela once again evokes a strong emotional connection between the reader and the characters in her story. Jennifer Graham's desire to reconnect her beloved mentor, Gerald Huffman, to his estranged daughter as he faces the fight of his life, is heartfelt, moving and brilliantly authentic. Real emotions, worries and fears imprint each character as life changes around them yet Angela intersperses their daily struggles with humour and moments of joy. A thread of romance and the poignant reminder that both life and death can be celebrated makes this story unforgettable and everything you expect an Angela Hunt novel to be, and more!

Shepherd's Fall by Wanda Dyson

Nick Shepherd carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. Estranged from his sister, his fugitive recovery business spiralling into debt and his personal life in tatters, Nick wonders how can keep it all together.

A straightforward job for Nick and his Prodigal Recovery Agency suddenly gets complicated and ends in tragedy, leaving Nick questioning his vocation and purpose in life. As he struggles to adjust, a new contract to locate prostitute and addict, Zeena Bantham focuses his energy on what he is good at ~ tracking down criminals to bring them to justice.

Annie McNamara is desperate to find Zeena but for entirely different reasons and she joins forces with Nick to flush her out into the open. When Nick's work and personal life collide with the abduction of someone he loves, will this be the one recovery he fails to make?

Wanda Dyson mixes suspense, danger and a man at the crossroads of life in this riveting novel. Inheriting his father's fugitive recovery business with his younger siblings, Steven and Marti, Nick feels responsible to uphold his father's legacy but fails to see how his loyalty to that goal is impacting the lives of those he loves and it is around these issues that Wanda weaves Nick's faith battle. Without a doubt, the life of a bounty hunter makes for fasinating reading and while the action is fast and furious, most appealing about Shepherd's Fall is the authentic characterisation that stamps each person in this story. Nick is heroic in his career yet unable to hold his marriage together and is failing dismally to understand his teenage daughter and her needs. Nick's fellow bounty hunters, Rafe and Conner provide engaging banter and light hearted moments while the sibling rivalry and misunderstandings between Nick, Steven and Marti are pivotal to both the plot and exceptional character development. If I had to quibble, the ending is a little too neat but that will not stop me seeking out the rest of this unique and enthralling series.
Shepherd's Fall launches this trilogy with a cracking pace and lays a fascinating foundation for the following books focused on the other Shepherd siblings, Steven and Marti.

CFBA Blog Tour of Boneman's Daughters by Ted Dekker

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Boneman's Daughters

Center Street (April 14, 2009)

by

Ted Dekker

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ted is the son of missionaries John and Helen Dekker, whose incredible story of life among headhunters in Indonesia has been told in several books. Surrounded by the vivid colors of the jungle and a myriad of cultures, each steeped in their own interpretation of life and faith, Dekker received a first-class education on human nature and behavior. This, he believes, is the foundation of his writing.

After graduating from a multi-cultural high school, he took up permanent residence in the United States to study Religion and Philosophy. After earning his Bachelor's Degree, Dekker entered the corporate world in management for a large healthcare company in California. Dekker was quickly recognized as a talent in the field of marketing and was soon promoted to Director of Marketing. This experience gave him a background which enabled him to eventually form his own company and steadily climb the corporate ladder.

Since 1997, Dekker has written full-time. He states that each time he writes, he finds his understanding of life and love just a little clearer and his expression of that understanding a little more vivid. Dekker's body of work encompassing seven mysteries, three thrillers and ten fantasies includes Heaven's Wager, When Heaven Weeps, Thunder of Heaven, Blessed Child, A Man Called Blessed, Blink, Thr3e, The Circle Trilogy (Black, Red, White), Obsessed, Renegade, and Chaos.

Enjoy:~

If you could have chosen your own name, what would it be?

Maybe an old name like Kathleen or Elizabeth.

Your first pets name?

My cat-Snowball.

Your best friends name in primary (elementary) school?

My older sister, Dianne was really my best friend when I was that young and we moved around a bunch when I was in elementary school within the same town, so it was hard to have a real friend.

Did you have a special toy that went everywhere with you when you were young? Please describe.

My doll that I called “Dolly”. She was made of thin rubber that finally wore right through her neck and her head fell off. My daddy taped it with masking tape. Pretty ugly, even for back then.

If you could meet a famous person, who would it be?

Sam Elliott-the ultimate cowboy!

If you were stranded on a desert island what one object would you want with you? (Besides your Bible of course)

My lipstick or lip gloss.

What's your favourite ice cream flavour?

I’m boring-just give me vanilla!

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A writer, first, an actress or model and would you believe an ice skater? I loved roller skating, because we didn’t ice skate in the south.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Israel. I’d want to see everywhere that Christ walked.

Besides God, who has influenced you the most?

My mother who was a strong Christian and full of life!

What's your favourite book?

Oh, that’s a hard question but I’ll pick Gone With the Wind.

What part of your daily routine do you enjoy most?

That first cup of coffee and my quiet time.

What's your favourite movie?

Gosh…another hard one to answer. Probably Dances With Wolves.

Where's the most interesting place you have been?

SW Colorado, places like Telluride, Mesa Verde and the Black Gunnison Hills.

What's your most fervent prayer?

That I live my life in such a way that others will want to know more about Jesus Christ.

What's the bravest thing you've ever done?

This may not sound like much, but it was flying to Kalispell, Montana alone for three weeks and changing planes in Salt Lake. Two airports that I’d never been too.

What gift have you received that you will always treasure?

A music box of a wooden church that plays Amazing Grace that my mother gave me a long time ago.

What is your favourite Bible verse (or "one" of your favourites) and what does it mean to you?

It would have to be Psalm 27:1, the Lord is my light and salvation; Whom shall I fear?

What was your most embarrassing moment in High School?

Mmmm…I can’t think of one honestly.

How did your husband propose to you?

Actually, he never did…it was just assumed.

What was the best advice you received on marriage before you were married?

It was from my older sister, Gail. She told me to place God and family first and of course, she was right.

No Place For A Lady

What appeals to you about writing historical romances?

I think my love of writing historical romance stems from reading Zane Grey novels and watching westerns growing up. As kids my brother, sister and I loved playing cowboys. Then my husband and I moved to Colorado and I fell it love with everything western. I really wanted to be a cowboy!

How do you select your characters' names?

I really have no method. If I read a name in the newspaper or magazine or meet someone with an interesting name, I jot it down for later reference. I really want my readers to identify with my character’s names and be comfortable with them. I also look in old reference books of the West.

Crystal suffers many losses yet manages to rise above it and move on with her life. Do you think people were bred of sterner stuff in those days?

I remember having this discussion several times with my family about people that settled in the West. I really believe they were tough and demanding of themselves and without all the conveniences that we have today. I think we have romanticized the American Cowboy in history, but he did play a big role in the development of the West along with many other professions. Westerners endured terrible snow storms, drought, fire, Indians and diseases, all while trying to carve out a place to call their very own. Would we be willing to work as hard as they did—sometimes I think not.

Can you give us a sneak peek at the next Heart of the West series, The Jewel of His Heart?

Jewel of His Heart is about a rancher turned sheepherder who discovers rare sapphires on his property in Montana. He falls in love with a young woman, whose faith has been shaken not once, but twice. Juliana decides that she doesn’t trust God, and she’s not too sure about men. Josh must convince her otherwise or face losing her. The Big Sky Country hold two treasures worth pursuing…which will he choose?

What's in your writing pipeline?

I’m working on book three in the series Heart of the West, Kickin’ Up the Dust! I’m having fun with it and hope they’ll let me keep the title. The heroine is high-strung and loves to be in complete control. However, she will meet her match and learn that material possessions will not give her happiness. True love only comes without a price tag attached.

Thank you so much, Maggie :) It has been a pleasure having you here at Relz Reviewz!

Character Spotlight ~ Cheryl Wyatt's Ben Dillinger with giveaway

Today the spotlight shines on.............................................................Ben Dillinger

I don't read many Love Inspired books but I love Cheryl Wyatt's :) Action, romance and great characters all add up to engaging reading. I am looking forward to getting into Ready-Made Family when it arrives, especially after reading the insight Cheryl has provided into Ben!

Over to you, Cheryl:~

Brief physical description:

Extraordinarily tall for an Asian man. Military haircut, black and shaved above his ears. Tallest Asian man the heroine has ever seen. Due to Ben's career as a US Air Force Pararescue Jumper, he is in top physical form and uses all those magnificant muscles to rescue people from dangerous places. Mostly he rescues downed allied pilots, but his team also takes part in rescues during natural disasters.

Resembles actor Ben Affleck...only an Asian version. His mother is Asian, his father Caucasian. Ben resembles an Asian Ben Affleck.

Rel: I morphed Ben Affleck and Lost actor, Daniel Dae Kim for this photo of Ben ~ so what do you think, Cheryl ?!

Strengths:

Generous. Giving. Compassionate. Strong. Man of his word.
Ben is generous and giving of his time and his friendship which is how he met the single-mom heroine and her daughter. Ben has a brother with Mosaic Down Syndrome who he takes in for a period in order to enable his parents to do a stint of world-travel they'd always dreamed of.

Weaknesses:

Sometimes his generosity and compassion causes him to overcommit and he struggles with balancing responsibilities. But he does so with a good heart.

Quirk:

He is Asian who cannot stand to eat Asian cuisine and he's addicted to NASCAR racing.

My inspiration for this character:

With all the NASCAR races I go to, I brought my author friend Camy Tang to one, who pointed out how few Asians there were in the crowds. So, because I love flipping stereotypes on their heads, I thought it would be fun to create an Asian character who loves NASCAR.

Background to the story:

I met a woman at Disney World in Florida who inspired the story. As we sat by the pool, she talked about how she once passed out from an electrolyte imbalance while alone with her children and how terrifying that was. She determined after that to start taking better care of herself health-wise. So that sparked an idea, which I shared with her over the next hours as we chatted, about a single mom who happened to get the flu while traveling from one state to the other (different scenario completely from my poolside pal). Basically the heroine is at a pharmacy and, while pulling away with her young daughter in the car, she passes out at the wheel and crashes her car into a light pole. The woman's daughter rushes out and finds the hero (Ben) who runs over to help. He realizes the young mother and her daughter have fallen on hard times and determines to help them through out the book. In the process, he receives the blessing of romance and a ready-made family.

I also attend a multi-ethnic church that values people of all colors, shapes, sizes and socio-economic status. So that inspired me to write an interracial romance. Heroine is Caucasian and Ben is half-Asian. The book handles delicately the subject of prejudice as well, but it's mostly an action-and-emotion-driven romance.

Fantastic, Cheryl! Loved this insight :) Can't wait to read how the story pans out.

On Monday, I will be spotlighting Sally Stevens from Patti Lacy's What the Bayou Saw, a contemporary tale about a woman struggling with her past secrets.

The Secret by Beverly Lewis ~ Tracy's Take

What is it about?

Grace Byler’s family seems to be a typical hard-working, God-fearing Amish family. But just beneath the surface, lurk secrets that threaten their otherwise peaceful life. Grace and her siblings wonder why their mother, Letti, restlessly wanders outside at night and why their father, Judah, is so withdrawn. When Letti suddenly disappears one night leaving only a note, Grace’s world is thrown into turmoil. As she starts to ask questions and voice her concerns, her mother’s secrets slowly begin to unravel.

Heather Nelson is shocked by her doctor’s diagnosis. Refusing to believe it could be true, she decides to take her English thesis work and escape to Bird-in-Hand to get away from things at home for a while and finish her work in relative peace.

What I thought:

Beverley Lewis’s first book of her new ‘Seasons of Grace’ series, ‘The Secret’ is the tip of the iceberg that will no doubt be a wonderful new series. Beverley carefully ensconces the reader into Grace’s family in Bird-in-Hand before she begins weaving the threads of this tale of secrets.

Beverley’s strong character development ensures that the reader is quickly invested in the story. Grace is a young lady full of depth and courage and is aptly named. She is graceful and exudes a wisdom born out of a deep love for her family. It is Grace who keeps the family together when everything around them, including her father, begins to fall apart. Judah, is an interesting and perplexing character. One can’t help but wonder why he is so reluctant and resistant to sharing himself with the ones he loves.

Heather’s inclusion in the story seems, at first, completely unrelated. By the end of the book the two plots are merged, but her journey is just beginning. I felt drawn to Heather and her plight and can’t wait to get to her know better in coming books.

My one despair with this new series? That it will be quite some months before the next book comes out and I can delve deeper into what drives these charming and engaging characters! I am desperate to know the outcome of Letti’s journey and what will happen to Heather. Will Letti return home, and will she be received with open arms or will she be banned by her Old Order church before she accomplishes what she has set out to do?

Blog Tour ~ Enduring Justice by Amy Wallace & Giveaways!

Hanna Kessler and FBI agent Michael Parker's tentative relationship is balanced on a knife's edge. Hanna's hidden traumatic past and Michael's obsession with destroying a white supremicist leader and his men, are slowly paralysing their friendship and attraction.

When the racial attacks become personal and Hanna's secrets are exposed, Michael faces a choice to seek revenge or pray that justice prevails.

Enduring Justice is confronting, harrowing and compelling but ultimately a story of redemption and healing. Amy Wallace once again reveals her talent for impeccable characterisation with authentic writing and heartfelt emotion as Hanna and Michael struggle between their desire for vengeance and their spiritual beliefs. Amy maintains the perfect balance between a fast paced FBI investigation, the emotional entanglement of her protagonists, authentic dialogue and the evil intent of a twisted mind. Enduring Justice is a fitting ending to the Defenders of Hope trilogy and I can't wait for more from Amy's heart and hand!

Character Spotlight ~ Amy Wallace's Michael Parker and Hanna Kessler

Today the spotlight shines on.......................... Michael Parker and Hanna Kessler

Amy Wallace is a wonderful author and a kind and giving person! Her latest novel, Enduring Justice, is outstanding, tackling the difficult issues of abuse, racism and the desire for justice with compassion and directness. Amy's characterisation is impeccable and you will love the insight she gives below on Michael and Hanna ~ look for my review of Enduring Justice tomorrow as part of Amy's book tour, with a brilliant giveaway!

Thanks, Amy:~

Brief physical description

Michael Parker is about the same height as Steven, blond with chocolate brown eyes and he’s solid muscle. He’s also the youngest of the CACU agents at twenty-nine.

Justin Bruening as the new Knight Rider is a close match for Michael.

Hanna Kessler is blond, blue-eyed and the tallest female of the group at 5’ 9”. And while Michael sure thinks she’s gorgeous, Hanna has never believed that about herself and carries a sadness in her eyes that no one in her family understands.

A blond Reese Witherspoon is as close as I've seen an actress resemble Hanna.

Strengths and weaknesses

Michael’s strengths are his intelligence and deep contemplation of everything. He’s also very outspoken and honest. His weaknesses are his temper and impulsiveness.

Hanna’s strengths are her creativity and love for her family. Her weaknesses are found in wanting to stay hidden and a deep fear of truly being known.

Quirk (if any)

Michael’s quirks are always having his nose in a computer and revving his black Mustang when he’s upset. He also likes to air band to his favorite 90s alternative rock.

Hanna’s quirk is always sneaking up on her brother Steven. I loved when she’d do that. Plus, for as much as she thinks she’s weak, she’s strong enough to put her brother in his place when he gets too overprotective.

Your inspiration for the character

Michael was originally just a rookie Steven took under his wing. But the more Michael crept into the stories, the more I wanted to understand how a new believer would tackle killing someone in the line of duty and standing up to a boss he respects when he falls for Steven’s sister. Michael is the character I most hope becomes my son-in-law someday. He’s flawed and a bit on the wild side, but he’s honest and open and eager to grow in his faith. I also love how he treats Hanna, like she’s a treasure.

The inspiration for Hanna came from my story more than any of the other characters. On the surface, we’re nothing alike, but she has traits and abilities of people I love dearly. On the inside, we’re very much alike, so much so it hurt to write her sometimes. But I loved how God took what appeared to be a weak and timid person and showed me the diamond He sees. So even more than my story, God’s healing hand and strength were my inspirations for Hanna.

Background to the story

Hanna Kessler's childhood secret has remained buried for over two decades. But when the dark shadows of her past threaten to destroy those she loves, Hanna must face the summer that changed her life and the man who still haunts her memories.

As a Crimes Against Children FBI Agent, Michael Parker knows what it means to get knocked down. Difficult cases and broken relationships have plagued his entire year. But when the system fails and a white supremacist is set free, Michael's drive for retribution eclipses all else.

A racist's well-planned assault forces Hanna and Michael to decide between executing vengeance and pursuing justice. The dividing line between the two is the choice to heal. But when the attack turns personal, is justice enough?

Fabulous, Amy! Thank you once again for spending time here at Relz Reviewz :) We love your books and you!

CFBA Blog Tour of Deadlock by Robert Liparulo

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Deadlock

Thomas Nelson (April 2009)

by

Robert Liparulo

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Robert Liparulo is a former journalist, with over a thousand articles and multiple writing awards to his name. Readers of his action-thrillers were not surprised when his visual storytelling style caught the eye of Hollywood producers. Currently, three of his novels for adults are in various stages of development for the big screen: the film rights to Comes A Horseman were purchased by the producer of Tom Clancy’s movies; and Liparulo is penning the screenplays for GERM and Deadfall for two top producers. He is also working with the director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive, Holes) on a political thriller. Novelist Michael Palmer calls Deadfall “a brilliantly crafted thriller.” March 31st marked the publication of Deadfall’s follow-up, Deadlock, which novelist Gayle Lynds calls, “best of high-octane suspense.”

Liparulo’s bestselling young adult series, Dreamhouse Kings, debuted last year with House of Dark Shadows and Watcher in the Woods. Book three, Gatekeepers released in January, and number four, Timescape, comes out in July. The series has garnered praise from readers, both young and old, as well as attracting famous fans who themselves know the genre inside and out. Of the series Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine says, “I loved wandering around in these books. With a house of so many great, haunting stories, why would you ever want to go outside?”

He is currently working on his next thriller, which for the first time injects a bit of the supernatural into his gun-blazing stories. The story is so compelling, two Hollywood studios are already in talks to acquire it—despite its publication date being more than a year away. After that comes a trilogy of novels, based on the critically acclaimed short story he contributed to James Patterson’s Thriller anthology. New York Times bestselling author Steve Berry calls Liparulo’s writing “Inventive, suspenseful, and highly entertaining . . . Robert Liparulo is a storyteller, pure and simple.” He lives with his family in Colorado.

ABOUT THE BOOK

John Hutchinson thinks it's no coincidence that Brendan Page runs this modern Praetorian Guard, and that the billionaire military industrialist must have had something to do with the atrocities his son Declan committed in Canada. The Canadian and U.S. Justice departments disagree, but Hutch has been digging for dirt ever since.

Brendan Page has some dirty not-so-little secrets. he's built an empire on supplying futuristic weapons and highly trained soldiers to the world's most powerful armies. But he's saved his most destructive weapons for himself.

When Hutch discovers the secret of Page's success, Page decides to teach him a lesson. But the operation goes terribly wrong, and Hutch's son is kidnapped. While a lone man stands little chance against the best black op soldiers ever issued M-16s, Hutch manages to survive longer than Page anticipated. As far as Hutch is concerned, high-tech helmets, machine guns, and hand grenades are nothing compared to a man determined to save his son.
