Special Character Spotlight ~ Robert Liparulo's Toria King

Today the spotlight shines on...............................Toria King

When the third book in the Dreamhouse Kings series, Gatekeepers, released in January, you had the chance to vote on which character you would like Bob to spotlight to celebrate the release of Timescape ~ voting was tied on Toria and Xander! So today, Bob shares some great insight into the youngest King sibling and tomorrow, Xander gets his turn in the spotlight!

Enjoy learning more about Toria and be sure to leave a comment and share your thoughts, and appreciation, with Bob about this character.

TORIA KING

Brief physical description

Toria, whose full name is Victoria King, is a nine-year-old girl. She has a bright smile, long, brown hair, and blue eyes, like her dad and brother Xander. She’s full of energy, but also a bit of a brainiac. She likes to read and learn things. In Whirlwind (Dreamhouse Kings, #5), when the family is trying to figure out more about Phemus—the big guy from the past who kidnapped Mom—she remembers that in My Fair Lady Professor Higgins claims he could tell where someone is from just by hearing them talk. That leads them back to the her Teddy Bear, Wuzzy, whose voice recorder captured Phemus’s voice in the first book. She’s the baby of the family, which includes her two brothers David, 12, and Xander, 15. In many ways, she’s very much a little girl. She likes to dress up her stuffed animals and have little parties with them, and she can’t sleep without her Fiona (from Shrek) nightlight. But as the story progresses, we realize she has abilities and qualities that makes her more valuable to the family’s fight to get Mom back than her Disney Princess nightgown and dimples would imply.

Actor/famous person

Through the first two books, the only Dreamhouse character for whom I had an actor in mind was Dad (I pictured Bruce Greenwood, who played
the president in National Treasure: Book of Secrets and Captain Pike, Kirk’s boss, in the new Star Trek). Mostly, the others were compilations of people I knew. Then, my son Anthony went trick-or-treating in Hollywood with some friends. Among them was Adair Tishler, who plays Molly on Heroes. I found myself almost calling her Toria several times and realized she’s a lot like I pictured Toria—both physically and her bubbly personality. Adair is a very sweet girl, someone you want to make sure nothing ever bad happens to. That’s how I feel toward Toria and how her brothers feel. I hope readers feel the same.

Left: Adair & Anthony Liparulo

Your inspiration for the character

Certainly, a part of Toria comes from memories of my sister, Lynda, at that age. I’m five years older, so I was close to Xander’s age when she was nine. I remember the things about her that drove me crazy, primarily that she liked girl things and “little kid” things at a time when I had a more adult mindset, like being interested in cars and thinking of a career, and trying to find out who I was apart from my family, like Xander is. There’s probably no time in our lives when we’re more different from our siblings than when one is well into being a teenager and a brother or sister isn’t even ten yet. I tried to work that into Toria and Xander’s relationship.

I also remember the cool things about Lynda then: how lively she was, how she was so much more optimistic than I was. Toria’s like that. She sees the bright side of some very dark situations, but sometimes she has to work at it. In Frenzy (book #6), she feels sadness about Mom coming on and makes a conscious decision not to bring her down: “She thought about Mom coming home, her smile, how she’d sweep Toria up in her arms and hug her like she was never going to let go.” Also, I raised a daughter and put more than a little of Melanie into Toria’s personality.

Strengths and weaknesses

One of the things I’d identify as a strength could also be considered a quirk: she often acts like a little mom, wanting to take care of her family. With Mom gone, she cooks for them and tends to their wounds. When David chokes on eggs, she’s right there, patting him on the back. When Xander cuts his forehead getting away from Phemus, she’s more concerned about stopping the bleeding than she is eluding their pursuer. Of course there’s the flip side to that “acts like mom” coin: she tends to be bossy toward and overprotective of her brothers. But it’s all good. David and Xander sometimes act annoyed by her maternal behavior, but deep down, they love that she cares so much and reminds them of mom.

I like that she has complete faith in her brothers. She believes in her heart that they mean well and can do whatever they say they can. In Gatekeepers, when Xander asks her to go into the Civil War world because he believes that’s where Mom is, she’s all for it, even though she’s scared. Like the best laid plans, it doesn’t work out so well. I remember telling Lynda how much fun it would be to send her down a flight of wooden stairs on a beanbag chair. She ended up with a chipped tooth—not good, but not as bad as what almost happens to Toria when she listens to Xander.

One strength Toria has isn’t really something that’s her doing, except that she is who she is. She’s sort of the symbol of what the King family is fighting for (besides getting Mom back): sweetness, righteousness, and innocence. In the situation they find themselves in, with people trying to kill them and darkness pressing in on them, Toria is the light, the happy face and kind word when they need them.

She does tend to talk a lot. She rambles on about things happening to the family, as well as little facts that are connected in ways only she knows. And when she screams—yow!

Quirk (if any)

I’m not sure Toria has any real quirks, except her optimism. When everyone else is falling apparent, she’s there looking for the bright side. She’s able to sleep when the others can’t. I suppose this unflappability can grow irksome after a while. Still, it’s a nice quirk to have.

Background to the story

The King family moves to a small town in northern California, so Dad could take a job as principal of the local middle and high school. (The boys go to that school, but Toria goes to a local elementary school.) They move into a run-down Victorian home, where they find a hidden hallway of doors. Each door leads to a portal to a different time in history. Trouble is, not only can they go from the house to the past, people from the past can come through into their house. Someone does—and kidnaps Mom, taking her into some unknown place in the past. The Kings—primarily David and Xander—begin a quest for Mom, which takes them to many dangerous and incredible places throughout time. Toria helps where she can—ending up in a different place in history a time or two—but mostly, she lends moral support. We slowly learn that the family is in the house for a very specific purpose and they must do much more than “simply” find their mother.

Fabulous, Bob ~ thanks for shedding light on the delightful Toria :) Maybe Anthony will be old enough to star in a movie about the Kings!!!

Be sure to come back tomorrow for our spotlight on Xander and enter the giveaway you won't want to miss!

Character spotlight ~ Eric Wilson's Cal Nichols

Today the spotlight shines on..............................Cal Nichols

When I asked novelist Eric Wilson to share about his character, Cal Nichols, Cal himself decided to visit! Can't get better than the character himself sharing about his own life :) Be sure to read Cal's story in Eric's Field of Blood and the just released, Haunt of Jackals.

Thanks Cal (& Eric!):~

Brief physical description

Cal Nichols...Being one of those raised from the grave when the Nazarene died and was resurrected (Mt. 27:50-53), I am immortal. I've changed looks to hide this fact, but I'm tall, broad-shouldered, narrow-hipped, with tan skin and green eyes that sparkle with flecks of gold. My hair is dark brown, but I often wear it dyed a golden-wheat color.

Actor/famous person

Once, while sporting a beard, I was told I looked like Richard the Lionhearted. Of course, that was hundreds of years ago and you wouldn't know what he looked like, would y
ou? I guess a more modern example would be a young Viggo Mortensen (but I do have a penchant for all things Lord of the Rings, so don't quote me on it).

Strengths and weaknesses

I have deep empathy for mankin
d, but my own desire for companionship led me into a one-night-stand with a mortal woman. We had a daughter named Gina Lazarescu, a half-immortal. I'm still wrestling with my human guilt, trying to understand forgiveness and the grace that has passed on to my daughter.

Quirk (if any)

In my atte
mpts to stay up with modern culture, I tend to butcher slang phrases. For example, I might mix "walking a tight rope" and "follow the narrow road" and say: "You're walking a tight road."

Your inspiration for the character

I suppose my author, that Eric guy, was inspired by the scriptural saints raised from the tombs, as much as by his own desire to someday walk through walls and live in a glorified body
. Who doesn't want that? One day we'll all be together with the Nazarene!

Backgrou
nd to the story

You've read
my background in the earlier questions. I'm immortal. My daughter's half-immortal. I've grieved the Nazarene by my moral failure, and yet I'm standing strong, raising up Those Who Resist and training the youth to fight the Master Collector and his minions who want to add us to their Collection of Souls. Too bad for them.

We have the
power of the Nazarene Blood flowing through our veins!

Thanks for stopping by Cal ~ we appreciate it greatly :)

This weekend, I have two special spotlights and a fabulous giveaway from Robert Liparulo and his characters Xander & Toria. So stay tuned to celebrate the release of the next Dreamhouse Kings story, Timescape!

June Bug by Chris Fabry ~ Tracy's Take

What is it About?

Nine year old June Bug never thought to question anything her Daddy told her. Not until the day she walked into a Walmart in Colorado and found herself staring at a picture of herself on the board of missing children. All of a sudden June Bug (or is her name Natalie Anne Edwards?) starts to question everything about her life and who her Daddy really is.

Johnson and June Bug have lived a vagabond life in an RV, drifting wherever the road takes them. They’ve never been inclined to stay too long in one place, lest someone discover Johnson’s secret. Three weeks in Colorado waiting on a part of their broken down RV is the thread that begins to unravel Johnson’s carefully protected secret and the life he has built with June Bug.

As he begins to face June Bug’s newfound knowledge, Johnson knows that he needs to make some life-changing decisions. Will he have the courage to do the right thing? Or will he choose to keep his heart in one piece?

What I thought:

Chris Fabry’s exceptional artistry as an author is once again demonstrated in the poignantly written tale of ‘June Bug’. It is a truly worthy companion to Chris’s debut adult novel ‘Dogwood’.

The story ‘June Bug’ is told predominantly through the eyes of a nine year old girl, who begins to really examine her life and the secrets she never knew existed. Chris gives this little girl a voice that illuminates the depths of a child’s heart and thoughts. It is with a great deal of skill that Chris balances quite mature thoughts with the reality that there is much a nine year old cannot know. I found June Bug to be a girl I’d love to know in real life. A girl full of spunk, endearingly precocious and fiercely loyal, June Bug’s character works her way into your heart before you know it.

‘June Bug’ is the very definition of bittersweet. As the final chapters reveal all the details of the truth Johnson kept hidden, my heart broke and tears flowed. It is through these final revelations that Chris deftly ties together the threads that challenge one’s thoughts on justice and mercy, of doing the right thing and of honesty and integrity.

Chris Fabry’s exceptional style and his mastery of the written word will solidify his already well-earned place on bookshelves across the globe.

Worth A Thousand Words by Stacy Hawkins Adams

Life has always gone Indigo Burns's way. She's smart, pretty, and talented, and she knows exactly what she wants. A photography internship at her hometown's local newspaper is the next step in her well-laid plans for her future. But her long-term goals are put to the test when her boyfriend Brian proposes--two years before he's supposed to and in front of all the guests at her college graduation party. Too concerned about his feelings to say no, she heartily agrees, but inside she's cringing.

Indigo knows in her heart that she's not prepared to sacrifice her dreams to become Brian's wife--not before she has achieved any of them. Will she find the answers among family and friends in Jubilant, Texas? Or will the picture-perfect life she dreams of be left behind?

My take:~

Worth A Thousand Words is my first foray into Stacy Hawkins Adams' writing and it won't be the last. With a gentle yet probing style, Stacy highlights the deep struggles her characters endure because of past choices as well as their perceived need to meet others' expectations. Indigo and Brian are fascinating characters that many readers will relate to and their journey is unexpected and authentic. Tackling issues that are often avoided in Christian Fiction, Stacy does so with sensitivity and discernment and thankfully does not succumb to a clean cut ending. Worth A Thousand Words is well worth adding to your collection!

Character Spotlight ~ Claudia Mair Burney's Amanda Bell Brown & Jazz Brown

Today the spotlight shines on..........................Amanda Bell Brown & Jazz Brown

Claudia Mair Burney is courageous, funny and deeply reflective and her writing exposes those traits beautifully! Deadly Charm is the final book in her Amanda Bell Brown mystery series and is well worth discovering. Enjoy this insider's peek into what makes Jazz and Bell tick!

Thanks, Mair:~

Amanda Bell Brown

Brief physical description

Bell is short, a mere five feet one and three quarters of an inch tall. She has what she'd sarcastically call "generous curves". She wears between size ten and twelve, and her
weight varies from 140 to 155 lbs. She prefers her African American hair natural, but is known to gild the proverbial lily with the help of braid extensions.

Think Tracie Thoms. She's adorable, but not so incredibly pr
etty regular gals would want to hurt her.

Strengths and weaknesses

Bell is loyal and courageous, and her heart is wide open. She trusts her instincts, but despite her best intentions, she's a trouble magnet. While she's terribly insecure, once could do worse than have Bell Brown in their life. She'd be willing to die for a friend, a rare and beautiful quality.

Quirk (if any)

Bell is full of quirks. She's razor-tongued, self-deprecating, and full of weaknesses. She eats for comfort, is bullied by her mother and sister, and despite an astute knowledge of human behavior, often lacks insight into her own foibles. But for a person who is still suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, she's done very well for herself.

Your inspiration for the character

My great grandmother inspired Bell. I gave the character her name, and success my great grandmother never had. Unfortunately, poor Bell is wired a lot like Claudia Mair Burney. Heaven help her!

Jazz Bro
wn

Brief physical description

Bell's first impression of Jazz, besides the fact that he was stunning, was that he was tall, but not "too tall." He's five eleven, and rather lean, but not skinny, with a wiry build. His biracial heritage--his mother is African American and father is Irish American--makes it hard to place his race. You can't at first glance if "Mr. United Nations" is black, white, Latino, or all of the above. He wears his brown curly hair in a high top fade, so popular with black men.

Jazz is a pretty man, with a dazzling smile. Think Daniel Sunjata

Strengths and weaknesses

Jazz is a strong, heroic man, the kind that would have no qualms about protecting a woman. He'd definitely take a bullet for his beloved, but would rather not! He hasn't always been a good boy, and was burned by his ex-wife. He really is that unsure about wanting a relationship. His weakness is that being a homicide detective for so long has made him somewhat hard. He drinks too much, curses, and isn't always sensitive, yet he is a man of deep convictions, though it may not always show. I give him a break because he sees horrors daily that most of us don't experience, even in our nightmares. When He decides that he wants Bell once and for all, there isn't much that's going to stop him from having her, including her!

Quirk (if any)

He has a pathological fear of all things Charismatic. He's a Roman Catholic, but knows all the jargon of a good, holiness Evangelical Pentecostal.

Your inspiration for the character

Jazz looks a lot like one of my ex boyfriends, but he acts a lot like several of the good but flawed men I know, including my husband. He's a composite of many interesting people, including some I wish I knew.

Background
to the story

A golden op
portunity fell right into my lap, when after only a few months of honest blogging about my messy spiritual journey, a publisher wrote to me and asked if I'd write a novel. I had nuthin', so I started making up stuff from my totally lame life.

I had studied psychology, loved forensic and true crime shows, always wanted to write a mystery, but loved romance too. I've also heard I'm funny. I added all those things into a gumbo of a story. It was full of people like
the people in my life.

I wrote the book I wished I had to read.

Woo hoo - so much fun, Mair :) Thanks for sharing about Bell & Jazz ~ appreciate it a lot!

On Thursday, I will be spotlighting Eric Wilson's Cal Nichols and I can tell you it is very, very interesting reading. Cal himself will be sharing with us ;-)

Through the Fire by Shawn Grady and open giveaway

Firefighting burns in Aidan O'Neill's blood, but his innate gift for reading flames has made him overconfident and sometimes puts lives in danger. When one call goes horribly wrong and a rookie is hurt, Aidan ends up suspended and finds himself questioning everything.

An arsonist is targeting Reno, leaving a scorched path of destruction. The department needs Aidan back, but his return is troubled. The gift he relied on for so long has gone silent and it's as though the fires are coming for him, hunting him down. Teaming with a beguiling fire investigator who may know more than she's saying, Aidan must discover where his trust rests as the flames burn ever closer.

My take:~

Shawn Grady's debut novel oozes authenticity as firefighter Aidan O'Neill fights demons within and without, no doubt as the author has done in his own career as a firefighter and paramedic. Shawn brings his firsthand experience to life with vivid descriptions, non stop action and human angst, creating an enthralling story layered with mystery and faith. Some of the writing is choppy in parts, yet it strangely fits with a firefighter's unpredictable and ever changing day and while I would have enjoyed a longer story, Shawn's first offering is great sign of things to come from this exciting new author.
