Synopsis:~
No sooner is Shawn Collins home from the fighting in Europe than he is called upon to serve his country in another way--as a speaker on the war bond tour. While other men might jump at the chance to travel around the country with attractive Hollywood starlets, Shawn just wants to stay home with his son Patrick and the aging father with whom he has finally reconciled. When Shawn taps Katherine Townsend to be Patrick's nanny while he's on the road, he has no idea that she will be the key to his future happiness and the mending of his heart.
My take:~
Dan Walsh has written an intriguing story about a WWII hero, thrust back home after a miraculous escape, due to the tragic death of his wife. Details of wartime America, the war bond efforts and the escape scenes were fascinating, wrapped around a tender love story. I didn't connect with the characters as much as I had anticipated, given the excellent reviews this book is receiving, most likely because I have not read the first story, The Unfinished Gift. That aside, Dan writes with sensitivity, crafting genuine characters experiencing real life in a time of chaos and fear. Those who have read The Unfinished Gift will be satisfied with the conclusion of this tale.
