For Time & Eternity by Allison Pittman ~ Tracy's Take

Publisher’s Synopsis:

All Camilla Deardon knows of the Mormons camping nearby is the songs she hears floating on the breeze. Then she meets one of them—a young man named Nathan Fox. Never did she imagine he would be so handsome, so charming, especially after Mama and Papa’s warnings to stay away. Though she knows she should obey her parents, Camilla can’t refuse her heart. But even Nathan’s promises cannot prepare her for what she will face in Utah.

What I thought:

‘For Time and Eternity’ showcases Allison’s skill as an outstanding storyteller. Her writing is infused with grace and tenderness as she gently takes the reader on a journey through Camilla’s experience with the Mormon people.

Camilla’s story begins with a harsh family life. With a demanding father and a mother who will not stand up for herself or her daughter, it is easy to imagine how the peaceful, gentle people across the field might appeal to Camilla. I felt all Camilla’s internal bruises as if they were my own and easily understood why the Mormon group were so attractive, all the while wanting to warn Camilla about them! I felt a war within: “yes, get away from your family life”, but “no, don’t go with those people!”

The thread of Scripture throughout the story intrigued me and I loved how something that had been a chore for Camilla became the very thing to open her eyes years down the track. Camilla’s story is one that reminds me of the power of God’s Truth in His written word and its ability to change lives.

Allison’s portrayal of the Morman believers is a deeply respectful investigation of their beliefs and practises. I was reminded again how easily people are deceived by Satan, but also of how much more powerful God’s Word is in overcoming the lies.
